John Peter McArthur
John Peter McArthur (July 16, 1862 – February 19, 1942) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. McArthur first ran for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in a by-election on October 31, 1911 after the death of his brother Archibald J. McArthur a few months earlier. He would have Harold Riley who was the brother of Ezra Riley the previous representative for the seat, in the brothers by-election. McArthur would be handily defeated as Riley and the Conservatives would surprisingly sweep this and 3 other by-elections in a wave of support held on the same day. During the 1913 Alberta general election Incumbent Riley moved to the neighboring electoral district of Bow Valley leaving the riding vacant. Harold William Hounsfield Riley
Harold William Hounsfield Riley Sr. (December 15, 1877 – January 1, 1946) was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. He was born in St. Lambert, Quebec and his family moved to Calgary in 1888. On October 31, 1911 after the death of Archibald McArthur, Mr. Riley ran for the Conservative Party, in what would be known as the brothers by-election. His brother Ezra Riley represented the same district from 1906 to 1910. In the election he faced John Peter McArthur, brother to the late Archibald McArthur. He served Gleichen until the 1913 Election. During the 1913 he ran in Bow Valley, he was defeated by George Lane from the Liberal party. He was married to Maude Riley (née Keen) in 1907, who is best known for convincing the Calgary Police Force to hire women in 1913. Fred Davis (politician)
Alfred Thomas "Fred" Davis (March 26, 1868 – July 24, 1945) was a farmer and a politician on the federal and provincial level in Canada. He was born in 1868 in Mitchell, Ontario to William J. Davis and Tabitha Worth. He married Margaret Davidson in 1898. Political career Davis first began his political career as a municipal councilor in his home town of Mitchell, Ontario. He later became the towns Mayor. Davis ran for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the 1917 Alberta general election as a Conservative. He defeated Liberal incumbent John Peter McArthur and former Governor of Kansas John Leedy in a hotly contested election. Ezra Riley
Ezra Hounsfield Riley (June 5, 1866 – January 5, 1937) was a Canadian politician and rancher in Alberta, Canada. Riley served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1906–1910. Early life Riley was born in 1866 in Yorkville, Canada West (a suburb of Toronto then). He owned a large sum of land that he sold off to the City of Calgary in 1904. The land was developed into the historical Hillhurst-Sunnyside community northwest of Downtown. 1906 by-election Riley was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in a by-election for the Alberta Liberal Party on December 7, 1906. He would be re-elected to a second term in the 1909 Alberta general election. 1913 Alberta General Election
The 1913 Alberta general election was held in March 1913. The writ was dropped on 25 March 1913 and election day was held 17 April 1913 to elect 56 members to the 3rd Alberta Legislature. Elections in two northern districts took place on 30 July 1913 to compensate for the remote location of the riding. The method to elect members was under the First Past the Post voting system with the exception of the Edmonton district which returned two members under a plurality block vote. The election was unusual with the writ period for the general election being a very short period of 23 days. Premier Arthur Sifton led the Alberta Liberal Party into his first election as leader, after taking over from Alexander Rutherford.
