John Peck (naval Architect)
John Peck (June 12, 1725 Boston – May 3, 1790 Boston) was an American merchant and naval architect of the 18th century. He had been trained as a merchant, and as apprentice in that matter had served at sea as supercargo for a few voyages. Having become interested in naval architecture while studying mathematics in school, the experiences of observing ships at sea furthered that interest. It would appear, however, that his designing of ships was more of a hobby, compared to his main trade as a successful merchant. John Peck (footballer)
John Leslie Peck (7 August 1937 – 2 February 1993) was an Australian rules footballer, who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Hawthorn John Peck, the brother of Graham Peck, played for Hawthorn from 1954 to 1966. He was the first Hawthorn player to win the leading VFL goalkicking award. Peck won the award in three successive years in 1963–65. He Kicked 78 goals in 1963, 66 goals in 1964 and 58 goals in 1965. In 1960 Peck kicked the winning goal in a match against Collingwood at Victoria Park, It was Hawthorn's first win after 35 years at that venue. Peck was the last player to win the Coleman Medal from the wooden spoon winning side until Brendan Fevola from won it in 2006. He played in the 1961 and 1963 Grand Finals. John Peck (diplomat)
Sir John Howard Peck (16 February 1913 – 13 January 1995) was a British diplomat who served as Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the Council of Europe from 1959 to 1962, Ambassador to Senegal (with cross-accreditation to Mauritania) from 1962 to 1966, and Ambassador to Ireland from 1970 to 1973. He also served as a Private Secretary to Sir Winston Churchill, and was the only one to serve with him during his wartime term of office between May 1940 to July 1945. He was knighted in 1970. Early life Peck was born on 16 February 1913 in Kuala Lumpur in Malaya, now Malaysia. His parents were Howard Peck, a civil engineer, and Dorothea Peck. In 1915, the family returned to England and lived in Basingstoke, Hampshire, and later Northamptonshire. John Peck (poet)
John Frederick Peck (born 1941) is an American poet, Jungian analyst, editor and translator. As Poet Peck was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1941. He earned a Ph.D. in English from Stanford University in 1973, where he studied with the poet and literary critics Yvor Winters and Donald Davie. Peck's dissertation, ''Pound's Idylls with Chapters on Catullus, Landor, and Browning,'' was supervised by Davie, and focused on the writing of the American modernist poet Ezra Pound. Peck’s allusive, musically nuanced poetry shows clear traces of Pound, though Peck’s ideas and metaphors tend to engage rather than insist. Peck writes primarily in free verse, though he does, in his words, “plait phonic elements across both accentual and syllabic grids,” a patterning of sound that he characterizes as having been more influenced by verse written by Pound's friend and contemporary Basil Bunting than by Pound. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. John Mason Peck
John Mason Peck (1789–1858) was an American Baptist missionary to the western frontier of the United States, especially in Missouri and Illinois. A prominent anti-slavery advocate of his day, Peck also founded many educational institutions and wrote prolifically. Biography Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, to a farming family, Peck received little formal education but in 1807 began to teach school. He was converted to Christianity at a revival at his Congregational Church. Marriage and family On May 8, 1809, Peck married Sally Paine, a native of New York state, whom he met in Litchfield. In 1811 the couple moved from Connecticut to Greene County, New York, near her family's home. Shortly after the birth of their first son, they joined the Baptist Church, in a mission from the New Durham, New Hampshire church.
