John Panzio
John Panzio, né Tuckson, Tockson or Toxon (c. 1838-1888), was the African Favourite, favorite and valet of king Charles XV of Sweden. Life He was reportedly born on the African continent with a surname variously spelled as Tuckson, Tockson or Toxon, but when he became a favorite of the king, the monarch thought the name Panzio more exotic and fitting for him. It is unknown how he arrived in Sweden. In 1857, he was in Fristad, and was apparently in service of the regimental officer in the Älvsborg regiment before he was introduced by the officer to Prince August, Duke of Dalarna, who took him in service in 1858 and in turn introduced him to Charles XV in 1860. Officially, he was given the title secondary valet and official pipe cleaner to the king, in reality he was a favorite just as the Armenian Ohan Demirgian, and their presence at court was seen as scandalous. A favourite (British English) or favorite (American English) was the intimate companion of a ruler or other important person. In post-classical and early-modern Europe, among other times and places, the term was used of individuals delegated significant political power by a ruler. It was especially a phenomenon of the 16th and 17th centuries, when government had become too complex for many hereditary rulers with no great interest in or talent for it, and political institutions were still evolving. A valet or varlet is a male servant who serves as personal attendant to his employer. In the Middle Ages and Ancien Régime, valet de chambre was a role for junior courtiers and specialists such as artists in a royal court, but the term "valet" by itself most often refers to a normal servant responsible for the clothes and personal belongings of an employer, and making minor arrangements. Prince Nikolaus August of Sweden and Norway, Duke of Dalarna (24 August 1831 – 4 March 1873) was the youngest of the five children of King Oscar I of Sweden and Josephine of Leuchtenberg. Ohan Demirgian, or Démirdjian in French, also called Habib Bey (14 January 1837 – 1877), was an Egyptian-Armenian diplomat. He was the favorite of king Charles XV of Sweden. Biography Demirgian was an Armenians, Armenian and the son of the Egyptian foreign minister Stephan Bey. He was a student of the Mission égyptienne in Paris before he was employed as a secretary in the foreign ministry of the Egyptian vice-roy khediven Isma'il Pasha. Demirgian lived in France from 1844 to 1853 and studied at the Collège Stanislas de Paris and in Versailles. Thereafter, he moved to England where he lived for two years. After furthering his education in England, he returned to Egypt in 1855 where he married Arouse Araigian in 1859. He met Prince August, Duke of Dalarna in Egypt in 1860. Adolf Ludvig Gustav Fredrik Albert Badin n̩ ''Couchi'', known as Badin (1747 or 1750 Р1822) was a Swedish court servant (Kammermohr) and diarist.
