John P. McDonough (chaplain)
John P. McDonough (May 24, 1928 – November 17, 2021) was an American Air Force officer who served as Chief of Chaplains of the United States Air Force. Early life and education Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1928, McDonough was an ordained Catholic priest. He was a graduate of Saint John's Seminary. Career McDonough joined the United States Air Force in 1963 and was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base. In 1982, McDonough became Command Chaplain at Headquarters, United States Air Forces in Europe. From there, he served as Command Chaplain at Headquarters, Tactical Air Command from 1984 until 1985, when he became Deputy Chief of Chaplains of the United States Air Force. He was promoted to Chief of Chaplains with the rank of major general in 1988 and held the position until his retirement in 1991. Major General (United States)
In the United States Armed Forces, a major general is a two-star general officer in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force. A major general ranks above a brigadier general and below a lieutenant general. The pay grade of major general is O-8. It is equivalent to the rank of rear admiral in the other United States uniformed services which use naval ranks. It is abbreviated as MG in the Army, MajGen in the Marine Corps, and in the Air Force and Space Force. Major general is the highest permanent peacetime rank in the uniformed services as higher ranks are technically temporary and linked to specific positions, although virtually all officers promoted to those ranks are approved to retire at their highest earned rank. A major general typically commands division-sized units of 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers. Tactical Air Command
Tactical Air Command (TAC) is an inactive United States Air Force organization. It was a Major Command of the United States Air Force, established on 21 March 1946 and headquartered at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. It was inactivated on 1 June 1992 and its personnel and equipment absorbed by Air Combat Command (ACC). Tactical Air Command was established to provide a balance between strategic, air defense, and tactical forces of the post–World War II U.S. Army Air Forces followed by, in 1947, the U.S. Air Force. In 1948, the Continental Air Command assumed control over air defense, tactical air, and air reserve forces. Eglin Air Force Base
Eglin Air Force Base is a United States Air Force (USAF) base in the western Florida Panhandle, located about southwest of Valparaiso in Okaloosa County. The host unit at Eglin is the 96th Test Wing (formerly the 96th Air Base Wing). The 96 TW is the test and evaluation center for Air Force air-delivered weapons, navigation and guidance systems, command and control systems, and Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) systems.
