John Boyd Orr, 1st Baron Boyd-Orr, (23 September 1880 – 25 June 1971), styled Sir John Boyd Orr from 1935 to 1949, was a Scottish teacher, medical doctor, biologist, nutritional physiologist, politician, businessman and farmer who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his scientific research into nutrition and his work as the first Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He was the co-founder and the first President (1960–1971) of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS). In 1945, he was elected President of the National Peace Council and was President of the World Union of Peace Organisations and the World Movement for World Federal Government. John Stewart Orr
John Stewart Orr FRSE FIP (d. 2001) was a 20th-century Scottish medical physicist and researcher. He was the creator of Orr's Spherule, a scientific teaching tool. Life He was born at 34 Gray Street in Glasgow on 10 August 1930, the second son of Neil Orr, a lawyer. The family lived most of their life in Milngavie. He was educated at the Atholl Preparatory School in Milngavie and Glasgow High School then studied Physics at Glasgow University graduating BSc. Although too young to serve in the war he served two years National Service in the late 1940s. For a while he worked with Barr and Stroud in Glasgow making specialist scientific instruments. Here he worked on developing missile guidance systems and on ultrasound instruments for medical use. He worked as a medical physicist for the West of Scotland Health Board being promoted to Senior Physicist in 1960 by Prof Lenihan. John Michael Orr (June 10, 1927 – December 30, 2013) was an American basketball player and coach, best known as the head coach of men's basketball at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, University of Michigan, and at Iowa State University. In the 1975–76 season, Orr was named National Coach of the Year. Early life and playing career Orr was born in Taylorville, Illinois or Yale, Kansas and grew up in Taylorville during the Great Depression. Orr attended Taylorville High School under coach Dolph Stanley and in his senior year (1944) led the ''Tornadoes'' to a state championship and a 45–0 record, the first team to ever finish a season undefeated in the Illinois High School Association's history. John Edward Orr (June 4, 1918 – July 12, 1982) was an American professional basketball and semi-professional baseball player during the 1940s. He played in the National Basketball League for four seasons as well as in the New York Yankees' baseball farm leagues for four seasons. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Orr was a multi-sport star at St. Rita of Cascia High School. After playing one season of college basketball, Orr signed a contract to play baseball in the Yankees' farm system, this ending his collegiate eligibility. He was a pitcher. John Orr, FBA (4 June 1885 – 10 August 1966) was an English-born Scottish-Australian scholar of French language and philology, and a translator of French literature. Early life and education Orr was born in 1885 in Cumberland to Scottish parents. When he was still a boy, the family migrated to Tasmania, where he attended Launceston High School and the University of Tasmania (he read classics at the latter). He won a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Balliol College, Oxford, beginning in 1905. He initially studied classics, switching to law for his finals, which he sat in 1909. A period of ill health led him to France and Switzerland for recuperation; there, he met his future wife, Augusta Berthe Brisac, and also developed an interest in French language and literature. Sir John Henry Orr (13 June 1918 – 26 September 1995) was a Scottish police officer and was the first Chief Constable of the Lothian and Borders Police. He was also a former Scotland international rugby union player. Police career Orr became a clerk with the then Edinburgh City Police. After becoming a full police constable, he rose through the ranks and became Chief Constable of the former Lothians and Peebles Constabulary. Following a merger of three police forces on 16 May 1975, John Orr became the first Chief Constable of the newly created Lothian and Borders Police, serving in the post until 1983. He was awarded an OBE in 1972, the Queen's Police Medal (QPM) in 1977, and was made a Knight Bachelor in the 1979 Birthday Honours.
