John O'Brien (Louth Footballer)
John O'Brien (born 12 October 1985) is a retired Louth GAA, Louth inter-county gaelic footballer. At club level he represents Dundalk team Seán O'Mahony's GFC, Seán O'Mahony's. Inter-county Having previously played for his county at minor and under-21 levels, O'Brien made his senior debut in 2006 in an O'Byrne Cup match against Dublin Institute of Technology, D.I.T. He would go on to become a mainstay of the Wee County XV for almost ten years. He was part of the team who almost won the county's first Leinster title in over 53 years but was snatched controversially by neighbours Meath GAA, Meath after ref Martin Sludden awarded a goal which proved to be a square ball and was thrown over the line. In early 2011 O'Brien announced his plans to emigrate to Australia in search for work alongside his team mates Michael Fanning (Gaelic footballer), Michael Fanning and midfielder Brian White. Louth GAA
The Louth County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Chontae an Lú) or Louth GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Louth. The county board is also responsible for the Louth county teams. Louth Intermediate Football League
The Louth Intermediate Football League is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by Louth GAA for Division 2 teams in County Louth. Format At the end of the league programme, the team with the most points is automatically promoted to Division 1 as league winners. The second-placed team can obtain promotion by winning a play-off involving a Division 1 club. The team that finishes bottom of the league is relegated to Junior football. The Louth Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition, organised by Louth GAA, among the intermediate grade Gaelic football clubs in County Louth, Ireland. History The competition, introduced as a bridge between the senior and junior grades, was first staged in 1907 and annually until 1912, when the county board discontinued it. It was revived 32 years later in 1944. However, the competition was only staged twice before it lapsed again. It re-emerged permanently on the county scene in 1978 with Kilkerley Emmets becoming the first winners of the Seamus Flood Cup. The Louth county football team represents Louth in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Louth GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Leinster Senior Football Championship and the National Football League. The 2009 O'Byrne Cup was a Gaelic football competition played by the teams of Leinster GAA. The competition differs from the Leinster Senior Football Championship as it also features further education colleges and the winning team does not progress to another tournament at All-Ireland level.
