John Nicholas D.D. was an English academic administrator at the University of Oxford. Nicholas was elected Warden (head) of New College, Oxford, in 1675, a post he held until 1679. John Nicholas (congressman)
John Nicholas (January 19, 1764December 31, 1819) was an American lawyer, farmer, and politician from Williamsburg, Virginia. He represented Virginia in the U.S. House from 1793 to 1801. In 1798, before the enactment of the Sedition Act, which made it a crime to publish "false, scandalous, and malicious writing" against the government or its officials, Nicholas declared the proposed Act to be unconstitutional. The Act was inconsistent with the freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment, Nicholas said, because the press could be punished for publishing true statements if it were not possible to prove the truth of the statements, which is often the case. In 1799, when Republicans in the House proposed to repeal the Sedition Act, a party line vote resulted in the rejection of the proposal. Johnny Nicholas
Johnny Nicholas (born 1948) is an American blues musician. He is most noted for being a member of the Grammy Award winning group, Asleep at the Wheel. Biography Nicholas grew up in Rhode Island, United States, where he formed his first band, The Vikings. The band performed cover versions of popular rhythm and blues hits of the time, along with songs by the Rolling Stones. In the mid-1960s, he formed the Black Cat Blues Band with Duke Robillard, Fran Christina and Steve Nardella. Around 1970, he formed the Boogie Brothers with Nardella. After attending the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1970, the band eventually moved on to San Francisco, California in 1972 per-request of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. By 1974, Nicholas had moved to Chicago, Illinois and began playing with Big Walter Horton. John Spangler Nicholas (March 10, 1895 – September 11, 1963) was an American embryologist and a professor of zoology at Yale University. He contributed to experimental techniques for the study of embryology through transplants, the early stage development of teleost and mammalian zygotes. Early life and education Nicholas was born in Kintnersville, Pennsylvania, the only child of Reverend Samuel Trauger and Elizabeth Ellen. Although the parents hoped he would join the Lutheran order, he chose to study medicine, influenced by an uncle, Harry Spangler. He earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Gettysburg College. He received a PhD from Yale University in 1921. Sir John Nicholas (1624 – 9 Jan 1705) was an English courtier and Member of Parliament. He was born the eldest son of Sir Edward Nicholas of Winterbourne Earls, Wiltshire, who was a Secretary of State under Charles I and Charles II. After being educated both privately and at Winchester College (1637–40) and Queen's College, Oxford (1641) he spent some time travelling abroad in France before entering the Middle Temple in 1647 to study law. He was appointed Clerk of the Signet in 1655 and Clerk of the Privy Council in 1660, holding both positions for life, and in 1661 was created a Knight of the Bath. He also served as a Justice of the Peace for both Wiltshire and Surrey, and as a Commissioner of Assessment for several counties. He was Keeper of Windsor Great Park from 1669 to 1671 and Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset from 1672 to 1674.
