John Nelson (infielder)
John Clark Nelson (born March 3, 1979) is an American former Major League Baseball shortstop who played for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006. Amateur career A native of Denton, Texas, Nelson played college baseball for the University of Kansas. In 1998, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League, and returned to the league in 1999 to play for the Harwich Mariners. Professional career Nelson was selected by the Cardinals in the 8th round of the 2001 MLB Draft. Originally an outfielder, the St. Louis Cardinals converted him to a shortstop. Nelson was promoted to the Cardinals on September 5, 2006, wearing the number 62, and made his major league debut on September 7, striking out against the Arizona Diamondbacks' Greg Aquino. An infielder is a baseball player stationed at one of four defensive "infield" positions on the baseball field. Standard arrangement of positions In a game of baseball, two teams of nine players take turns playing offensive and defensive roles. Although there are many rules to baseball, in general the team playing offense tries to score runs by batting balls into the field that enable runners to make a complete circuit of the four bases. The team playing in the field tries to prevent runs by catching the ball before it hits the ground, by tagging runners with the ball while they are not touching a base, or by throwing the ball to first base before the batter who hit the ball can run from home plate to first base. Gregori Emilio Aquino Valera (; ; born January 11, 1978) is a former professional baseball pitcher. He previously played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore Orioles, and Cleveland Indians. Career Arizona Diamondbacks Aquino was originally signed as a 16-year-old infielder in 1995, by the Arizona Diamondbacks. After spending the next decade in the Diamondbacks' farm system, he made his major league debut on July 2, 2004 against the Minnesota Twins.
