John Neal (writer)
John Neal (August 25, 1793 – June 20, 1876) was an American writer, critic, editor, lecturer, and activist. Considered both eccentric and influential, he delivered speeches and published essays, novels, poems, and short stories between the 1810s and 1870s in the United States and Great Britain, championing American literary nationalism and regionalism in their earliest stages. Neal advanced the development of American art, fought for women's rights, advocated the end of slavery and racial prejudice, and helped establish the American gymnastics movement. The first American author to use natural diction and a pioneer of colloquialism, John Neal is the first to use the phrase ''son-of-a-bitch'' in a work of fiction. John R
John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. (The other three were Gene Nobles, Herman Grizzard, and Bill "Hoss" Allen.) Later rock music disc jockeys, such as Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack, mimicked Richbourg's practice of using speech that simulated African-American street language of the mid-twentieth century. Richbourg's highly stylized approach to on-air presentation of both music and advertising earned him popularity, but it also created identity confusion. His Honour John Neal MC (17 August 1889 – 8 September 1962) was an English Judge and Liberal Party politician. Background He was the son of Arthur Neal MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Annie Elizabeth Neal. He was educated at Leys School, Cambridge and King's College, Cambridge. He married, in 1940, Rosemary Young. They had three sons. War 1914–1918 At the age of 25 he volunteered at the outbreak of war. He served in the European War with the RNVR, then in France with the Royal Artillery as a Major. He was awarded the Military Cross 1914–15 Star. Political career In 1922 at the age of 33, Neal followed his father into politics, also as a supporter of Prime Minister David Lloyd George. He was National Liberal candidate for the Wansbeck Division of Northumberland at the 1922 General Election. John Neal (Welsh Footballer)
John Edward Neal (29 November 1899 – 14 January 1965) was a Welsh international footballer who played for UCNW Bangor, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay and Wrexham. He was part of the Wales national football team, playing 2 matches. He played his first match on 25 October 1930 against Scotland and his last match on 22 November 1930 against England. The Unknowns The Football League refused to allow clubs to release players for internationals if it clashed with a League game. Welsh selectors were forced to pick home based players, including Llandudno-born Neal. The team dubbed 'the Unknowns' and captained by Cardiff City's Fred Keenor gained a 1–1 draw against Scotland at Glasgow's Ibrox Park in October 1930. Neal won his second and final cap in the next match, a 4–0 defeat by England in Wrexham the following month. John Neal (cricketer)
John Howard Neal (18 October 1926 – 18 April 2012) was an English cricketer. Neal was a right-handed batsman who fielded as a wicket-keeper. He was born at Ditchling, Sussex and educated at Hurstpierpoint College. Neal made his debut for Sussex in the 1950 Minor Counties Championship against Essex. Neal played a further two Minor Counties Championship matches from 1950 to 1951. Neal made a single first-class appearance for Sussex against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 1951. In Sussex's first-innings, he scored 5 runs before being dismissed by Malcolm Hilton. In their second-innings, he was dismissed for 23 runs by Alan Wharton. This was his only major appearance for Sussex. Neal died in hospital on 18 April 2012 after a short illness. John Neal (13 April 1932 – 23 November 2014) was an English football player and manager. Playing career Neal was a hard tackling full back who had seven seasons with Hull City, but seemed lost to the Football League when he joined King's Lynn in 1956. Swindon Town brought him back to the Football League and he missed only one game in two seasons with the Robins. His career peaked when he signed for Aston Villa in 1959, with whom he won the Football League Second Division championship and promotion to the Football League First Division. He won the inaugural Football League Cup a year later. He joined Southend United in November 1962. Managerial career Wrexham Neal was appointed manager of Wrexham in 1968, succeeding Alvan Williams who had brought Neal to the club as his assistant. John James Neal (born 11 March 1966) is a former professional footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for Millwall. Neal was born in Hornsey, in the London Borough of Haringey, and played football for England Schoolboys. He then played for the Republic of Ireland in two European Championships at U18 level. He finished top scorer in the competition and went on to play in the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship. At club level, he made six appearances in the 1983–84 Football League Third Division for Millwall. John Baldwin Neil (July 28, 1842 – October 6, 1902) was an American military officer and politician who served as Governor of Idaho Territory from 1880 to 1883. Earlier life Neil was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 28, 1842. The son of Robert E. Neil, his father was a wealthy man and early settler in the Columbus area. He attended public schools before enrolling in the Kentucky Military Institute. With the outbreak of the American Civil War, Neil enlisted in the Second Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 17, 1861. During his three month commitment, he saw action in First Battle of Bull Run. Neil returned to Ohio at the end of his enlistment and sought a commission. After helping to recruit a volunteer regiment, Neil was made a lieutenant on October 1, 1861 and saw his regiment attached to William Tecumseh Sherman's division under General Ulysses S. Grant.
