John Murray Campbell
John Murray "Jack" Campbell (May 14, 1931 – December 21, 2021) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1979 to 1989. He was the younger brother professional ice hockey player, Don Campbell (ice hockey), Don Campbell. Political career Campbell ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1979 Alberta general election. He won the electoral district of Rocky Mountain House (electoral district), Rocky Mountain House with a near landslide victory defeating three other candidates including future Alberta MLA John Younie and Social Credit leader Lavern Ahlstrom. Drumheller
Drumheller is a town on the Red Deer River in the badlands of Central Alberta, east-central Alberta, Canada. It is northeast of Calgary and south of Stettler, Alberta, Stettler. The Drumheller portion of the Red Deer River valley, often referred to as Dinosaur Valley, has an approximate width of and an approximate length of . Drumheller was named after Samuel Drumheller, who, after purchasing the homestead of Thomas Patrick Greentree, had it surveyed into the original Drumheller townsite and put lots on the market in 1911. Also in 1911, Samuel Drumheller started coal mining operations near the townsite. Drumheller got a railway station in 1912. It was then incorporated as a village on May 15, 1913, a town on March 2, 1916 and a city on April 3, 1930. Over a 15-year period, Drumheller's population increased from 312 in 1916 to 2,987 in 1931 shortly after becoming a city. Don Campbell (ice Hockey)
Donald William Campbell (July 12, 1925 — December 20, 2012) was a Canadian ice hockey centre that played 17 games in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks during the 1943–44 season. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1943 to 1954, was spent in the minor leagues. He later served as Superintendent of Parks and Recreation for the District of West Vancouver. 1982 Alberta General Election
The 1982 Alberta general election was held on November 2, 1982, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Less than four years had passed since the Progressive Conservatives won their landslide victory in 1979. Premier Peter Lougheed decided to call a snap election to catch fledgling new parties off guard, most notably the separatist Western Canada Concept which was capitalizing on anger over Lougheed's perceived weakness in dealings with the federal government, in particular his acceptance of the hugely unpopular National Energy Program. The WCC's Gordon Kesler had won a by-election earlier in the year, and Lougheed decided that it would be wise to stage a showdown with the WCC sooner rather than later. Lavern Ahlstrom is a retired provincial level politician and former leader of the Alberta Social Credit Party. Political career Ahlstrom first became involved with Social Credit in the 1970s. He has been a perennial candidate for the party with some moderately successful showings during his career. Ahlstrom first ran for office in electoral district of Rocky Mountain House in the 1979 Alberta general election finishing second to Progressive Conservative Jack Campbell. He ran for a second time in the 1986 Alberta general election, this time for the Representative Party of Alberta finishing third. In that election he was once again defeated by Campbell. John Younie
John Younie (born March 3, 1950) is a former provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for a single term from 1986 to 1989 and sat as a member of the New Democrats caucus when they held official opposition status. Political career Younie ran for a seat in the Alberta Legislature in the 1979 Alberta general election in the electoral district of Rocky Mountain House. He finished a distant third place out of four candidates behind future Social Credit leader Lavern Ahlstrom and John Murray Campbell who won the district. 1979 Alberta General Election
The 1979 Alberta general election was held on March 14, 1979, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, which had been expanded to 79 seats. The Progressive Conservative Party of Peter Lougheed won its third consecutive term in government. During the campaign, some Progressive Conservatives spoke of winning "79 in '79", i.e., all 79 seats in the legislature. This harkened back to Social Credit's unofficial slogan from the 1963 election, "63 in '63". The Tories came up short of this goal, and actually lost over five percentage points of the popular vote. Nonetheless, they still won an overwhelming majority, with 74 seats. Social Credit held on to the four seats they had won in the 1975 election, and formed the official opposition in the legislature. The Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta (often referred to colloquially as Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta) was a provincial centre-right party in the Canadian province of Alberta that existed from 1905 to 2020.
