John Moore Of Ipswich
John Moore (12 February 1821, Woodbridge – 8 April 1902, Diss) was a prominent Ipswich artist, particularly notes for his seascapes. Originally a painter and decorator, he became a self-taught artist. He moved to Ipswich before 1871, and was a founding member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1874. He found many patrons amongst the wealthy inhabitants of the town. Early life Moore was born in what is now Theatre Street, Woodbridge, and was baptised on 12 February 1821 at St Mary's Church. His father was a former sailor, Martin Moore who had since become a plumber and house painter. His mother was Elizabeth née Warren. John started out apprenticed to his father as a plumber and signwriter. In 1843 he married in 1843 Caroline Upson, with whom he had a son, also called John. Woodbridge, Suffolk
Woodbridge is a port and market town in the East Suffolk District, East Suffolk district of Suffolk, England. It is up the River Deben from the sea. It lies north-east of Ipswich and forms part of the wider Ipswich built-up area. The town is close to some major archaeological sites of the Anglo-Saxons, Anglo-Saxon period, including the Sutton Hoo burial ship, and had 35 households at the time of the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086. It is well known for its boating harbour and tide mill, on the edge of the Suffolk Coast and Heath Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Several festivals are held. As a "gem in Suffolk's crown", it has been named the best place to live in the East of England. Etymology Historians disagree over the etymology of Woodbridge. Carnser
A carnser (or caurnser) is a causeway or raised bank or embankment. The term is from East Anglian English which arose in Norfolk and Suffolk. It has had little use outside this area. In Norfolk the term has been used for a causeway across a marsh. In Ipswich, Suffolk it has been used to describe remnants of the town's earthen ramparts, which provided a raised area on which houses were built. Elsewhere the term was applied to a raised walkway whereby pedestrians could avoid walking in water flowing in the street, as in Stoke Street. This has since been removed. The historic use with the variant use of "Caunsey" has been found dating back to 1564. In a discussion of Norfolk dialect, a "Lover of Norfolk" stated: :". . . a narrow water course through a marsh is a 'mashe deke,' and a road between two 'dekes' is a 'carnser' (causeway); but a bank is a 'deke' for all that." Ipswich () is a port town and borough in Suffolk, England, of which it is the county town. The town is located in East Anglia about away from the mouth of the River Orwell and the North Sea. Old Ipswich Cemetery is a cemetery in Ipswich, Suffolk, which was opened in 1855. It is one of a group of cemeteries run by Ipswich Borough Council. History Following the passage of the Burial Act 1854 (17 & 18 Vict c 87), Municipal Borough of Ipswich was empowered to establish a Burial Board. This they did in AUgust of that year, and arranged to buy some land to the North East of the town from John Cobbold. The cemetery was laid out by William Davidson, with access provided by Cemetery Road. Ipswich Art Society is an exhibiting organisation for painters, sculptors and printmakers, based in Ipswich, Suffolk. It was founded as the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1874. It changed its name to Ipswich Art Club in 1925 and in 1993 to Ipswich Art Society.
