John Moir (basketball)
John Moir (May 22, 1915 – November 15, 1975) was a professional basketball player between 1938 and 1946 in the United States' National Basketball League. Early life Moir was born in Rutherglen, Scotland, to parents John and Elizabeth Moir. His father was a carpenter by trade, and Moir also had two siblings. In 1923, their family immigrated to the United States and chose to live in Niagara Falls, New York. As a freshman at Niagara Falls High School, Moir stood only tall. When he graduated from NFHS he enrolled at Trott Vocational School, at which point he had finished growing to and 184 lbs. It was at Trott where Moir first played basketball. When he finished his vocational education, Moir got a job at American Sales Book Company as their bookkeeper. African Lakes Corporation
The African Lakes Corporation plc was a British company originally set-up in 1877 by Scottish businessmen to co-operate with Presbyterian missions in what is now Malawi. Despite its original connections with the Free Church of Scotland, it operated its businesses in Africa on a commercial rather than a philanthropic basis. It had political ambitions in the 1880s to control part of Central Africa and engaged in armed conflict with Swahili traders. Its businesses in the colonial era included water transport on the lakes and rivers of Central Africa, wholesale and retail trading including the operation of general stores, labour recruitment, landowning and later an automotive business. The company later diversified, but suffered an economic decline in the 1990s and was liquidated in 2007. John Moir (29 July 1856 19 July 1939) was prominent businessman and politician who served as the mayor of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Born in Albany on 29 July 1856, he was the eldest son of Alexander Moir, who had arrived in Albany in 1852. Moir was sent to Perth as a child to study at Bishop's College. Arriving back in Albany at age 16 he joined his father in his business interests. By 1880 Moir's father retired and left him in charge of the family businesses. By 1882 Moir was the foundation president of the Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Moving to work briefly in South Australia Moir met and later married Edith Jane Lines in 1883. A year later they had a child, Clifford St John Moir, who died before his first birthday. Later, returning to Albany, he contested the first mayoral election in 1885 but lost to William Finlay. John Moir (settler)
John Moir (12 August 1851 31 May 1939) was an Australian pastoralist in the areas to the east of Albany, in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Born at Cape Riche in 1851, he was the eldest son of the pioneer Andrew Moir, who was from Markinch in Fifeshire, Scotland, and had settled in the region in the 1840s. The Moir family lived in a cottage in the neighbouring allotment to George Cheyne with two of John's brothers working at Cheyne's Cape Riche farm. The Moir family acquired the Cheyne's property in 1858, including the homestead. The homestead and out-buildings were constructed between 1850 and 1850. A billiards room was built by John Moir with the assistance of Aboriginal people, with a blacksmith shop built at around the same time. Much of the furniture was fashioned from driftwood found on the nearby beaches. Dr. John Innes Allan Moir FRSE (6 April 1808 – 14 May 1899) was a 19th-century Scottish physician and obstetrician who held multiple senior positions within the Scottish medical world. Early life Moir was born with the grounds of the military prison at Verdun in France on 6 April 1808 the son of Margaret Laing Stenhouse and Dr James Moir (b.1780), a naval surgeon in the Royal Navy, who was captured by the French when his ship sank in the Channel around 1806. While in prison Moir was allowed to be joined by his wife, hence his birth occurring in prison. Among his younger brothers was James Moir, a merchant who moved to America in 1836. From around 1815 (after the end of the wars), he lived with his family at 21 Blair Street in Edinburgh's Old Town.
