John Mitchels GAA (Louth)
John Mitchels GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club that fields gaelic football teams in competitions organised by Louth GAA. It is based in the townland of Ballybailie, part of the civil parish of Ardee, less than two miles from Ardee town centre. As of 2023, the club competes in the Louth Junior Championship and Division 3B of the county football Leagues. Former Newtown Blues player Jimmy Murray is the manager of the senior team. History The club was founded in 1957 and is named after the Irish nationalist John Mitchel. In 1994, the club reached the final of the Louth Intermediate Football Championship, but lost to Lann Léire by 3–08 to 0–07. 1998 saw the Mitchels crowned Louth Junior Football Champions after beating St Bride's. Ardee
Ardee (; , ) is a town and townland in County Louth, Ireland. It is located at the intersection of the N2, N52, and N33 roads. The town shows evidence of development from the thirteenth century onward but as a result of the continued development of the town since then much of the fabric of the medieval town has been removed. Ardee is on the banks of the River Dee and is equidistant between the county's two biggest towns - approximately 20 km (12 mi) from Dundalk and Drogheda, while it is also close to Slane and Carrickmacross. In the 20 years between the 1996 and 2016 census, the population of Ardee increased by approximately 30%, from 3,791 to 4,928 inhabitants. The Double (Gaelic Games)
The Double is a term in Gaelic games that refers to a county winning the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in the same year. Other major trophies won in combination in the same year at minor or under-21 levels are also often referred to as doubles. Similarly, the winning of the All-Ireland and the National League titles in the same year may also be referred to as the Double, albeit an inferior one. Brendan Reilly (Louth Gaelic Footballer)
Brendan Reilly (5 January 1979 – 16 September 2017) was an Irish Gaelic footballer. He came from a farming family outside Ardee, County Louth. At club level, he played with his local team John Mitchels (partly founded by his father Eugene Reilly) and later Naomh Máirtín. A county is a geographic region within Gaelic games, controlled by a county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and originally based on the 32 counties of Ireland as they were in 1884. While the administrative geography of Ireland has since changed, with several new counties created and the six that make up Northern Ireland superseded by 11 local government districts, the counties in Gaelic games have remained largely unchanged. However, the county as used in Gaelic games does not always and everywhere cover precisely the same territory as the traditional county. The Louth county football team represents Louth in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Louth GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Leinster Senior Football Championship and the National Football League. The Louth Junior A Football League, or Division 3A of the county football Leagues, is an annual Gaelic football competition. Introduced in 1921, it is contested by Junior clubs in County Louth. The captain of the winning team is presented with the Dixon Cup. Format A Final to determine the winner was held annually until 1996, when the format changed. At the end of the league programme, the team with the most points is now awarded the trophy and is promoted to Division 2. The second-placed team can obtain promotion by winning a play-off involving a Division 2 club. In 2019, Division 3 was split into separate A and B grades.
