John Messick
John Decatur Messick (November 9, 1897 – October 3, 1993) was the fifth president of what is now East Carolina University. He was born on November 9, 1897, near Aurora, North Carolina. He graduated from Elon College in 1922. He then went to summer school to complete graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1934, he earned a Ph.D. degree from New York University. In 1947, Messick became the fifth President of East Carolina Teachers College, a position he held until resigning in 1959. Dennis Hargrove Cooke
Dennis Hargrove Cooke (February 23, 1904 – March 1982) was the fourth president of what is now East Carolina University. He was born on February 23, 1904, in Maiden, North Carolina. Dr. Cooke received the A.B. degree from Duke University in 1925. He also earned an M.A. degree from Duke in 1928. He was a teaching fellow at Duke University in 1928–29, and a teaching fellow at Peabody College in 1929–30. He then received a doctorate in 1930 from Peabody College. Leo Warren Jenkins
Leo Warren Jenkins (May 28, 1913 – January 14, 1989) was the sixth president and chancellor of what is now East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, United States. He was born in the Succasunna section of Roxbury, New Jersey and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University, majoring in political science a masters from Columbia University and a doctorate from New York University. He enlisted in World War II as a marine, serving during the battle of Guam. Jenkins joined the faculty of East Carolina Teachers College in 1947 and served as Dean of the school until his election to the presidency in 1960. Under his watch, East Carolina gained university status in 1967. When ECU became part of the University of North Carolina System in 1972, Jenkins stayed on as chancellor, retiring in 1978. The Leo W. Aurora is a town in Beaufort County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 520 at the 2010 Census. Geography Aurora is located at (35.301476, -76.789461). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 9.60%, is water. The large Aurora phosphate mine is located just outside the town. Elon University is a private university in Elon, North Carolina.
