John Melvin (architect)
John Leonard Melvin (born 31 October 1935) is a British architect, town planner, and author. He is the former Chairman of the London Region of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). His architectural work has been widely exhibited in the UK and abroad by the RIBA and the British Council. In 1993, the Royal Fine Art Commission honoured him with the Building of the Year Award. In 1995, he was named to a Sargant Fellowship at the British School at Rome to research the idea of memory in architecture. Personal background Melvin was educated at Sutton Valence School, the Architectural Association School of Architecture, and the Department of Town Planning, University College London. AA Dip. John William Melvin (May 15, 1938 – July 17, 2014) was a research engineer in the field of the biomechanics of automobile crashes and a safety consultant in the field of automotive racing safety. Early life and education Melvin was born in Washington D.C. to Eleanor (Joness) Melvin and Eugene H. Melvin. He received his B.S. (1960), M.S. (1962) and Ph.D. (1964) degrees in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois. Career Melvin worked as a research scientist at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) from 1968 to 1985. He was an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics Department at the University of Michigan from 1978 to 1986. He was an Adjunct Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Wayne State University from 1987 to 1998, and an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the same institution from 1998 until his death. Lieutenant (junior grade) John T. Melvin (16 October 1887 – 5 November 1917) was an officer in the United States Navy. Born at Selma, Alabama, Melvin was appointed midshipman 6 July 1907 and commissioned ensign 7 July 1911. Resigning his commission 20 August 1915, he was appointed lieutenant (jg.), 9 February 1917, upon his joining the Naval Reserve. Attached to the patrol boat ''Alcedo'', Lieutenant (jg.) Melvin lost his life 5 November 1917 when that vessel was sunk by a German submarine in the war zone. ''Alcedo'' was the first American war vessel to go down in World War I World War I (28 July 1914 11 November 1918), often abbreviated as WWI, was one of the deadliest global conflicts in history.
