John McLoughlin Jr.
John McLoughlin Jr. (1812–1842) was a Metis Chief Trader employed by the Hudson's Bay Company. Early life He was the son of longtime Chief Factor of the Columbia District John McLoughlin and Marguerite Waddens MacKay. Fort Stikine He was appointed to Fort Stikine though was unpopular with some of the Metis among the staff. Murder Several staff members killed him on 21 April 1842, in what they alleged was self-defense at his drunken rage. Hawaiian Kanaka employees who witnessed the killing were to testify otherwise. They alleged that the rebel staff, led by one Urbain Héroux, had conspired with the local Tlingits to seize the post. Rivière-du-Loup
Rivière-du-Loup (; 2021 population 20,118) is a small city on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec. The city is the seat for the Rivière-du-Loup Regional County Municipality and the judicial district of Kamouraska. Its one of the largest cities in Bas-Saint-Laurent. History The city was named after the nearby river, whose name means ''Wolf's River'' in French. This name may have come from a native tribe known as "Les Loups" ("The Wolves") or from the many seals, known in French as ''loup-marin'' (sea wolves), once found at the river's mouth. Rivière-du-Loup was established in 1673 as the seigneurie of Sieur Charles-Aubert de la Chesnaye. Fur Traders
The fur trade is a worldwide industry dealing in the acquisition and sale of animal fur. Since the establishment of a world fur market in the early modern period, furs of boreal, polar and cold temperate mammalian animals have been the most valued. Historically the trade stimulated the exploration and colonization of Siberia, northern North America, and the South Shetland and South Sandwich Islands. Today the importance of the fur trade has diminished; it is based on pelts produced at fur farms and regulated fur-bearer trapping, but has become controversial. Animal rights organizations oppose the fur trade, citing that animals are brutally killed and sometimes skinned alive. Russian America (russian: Русская Америка, Russkaya Amerika) was the name for the Russian Empire's colonial possessions in North America from 1799 to 1867. It consisted mostly of present-day Alaska in the United States, but also included small outposts in California, including Fort Ross, and three forts in Hawaii, including Russian Fort Elizabeth. Urbain Héroux
Urbain Héroux (September 11, 1811 - October 20, 1853) was a French-Canadian employee of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), stationed primarily in the Pacific Northwest in the 1830s and 1840s. Héroux was born in Pointe-du-LacCanada East Census 1851 (''Recensement - Canada Est, district de recensement No 2'') in Lower Canada and baptized in nearby Trois-Rivières.Parish Registers, ''Immaculée-Conception,'' Trois-Rivières, Québec. Kanaka (Pacific Island Worker)
Kanakas were workers (a mix of voluntary and involuntary) from various Pacific Islands employed in British colonies, such as British Columbia (Canada), Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Queensland (Australia) in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They also worked in California (USA) and Chile (see Easter Island and Rapanui people as related subjects). "Kanaka" originally referred only to native Hawaiians, from their own name for themselves, ''kānaka ʻōiwi'' or ''kānaka maoli'', in the Hawaiian language. In the Americas in particular, native Hawaiians were the majority; but Kanakas in Australia were almost entirely Melanesian.
