Biraban
Biraban ( – 14 April 1846) was a leader of the Awabakal people, an Aboriginal Australian people who lived in the area around what is today Lake Macquarie. His native name prior to Awabakal initiation was We-pohng; his naming as Biraban is reference to his totemic relationship with the eaglehawk. Early life We-pohng was born at Bahtahbah (Belmont, New South Wales) c.1800. During his childhood We-pohng was abducted by the British and raised within the military barracks located in Sydney. Subsequently, We-pohng was assigned to Captain J.M. Gill, a member of th46th Regiment We-pohng remained with Captain Gill from February 1814 until Captain Gill departed Australia in December 1817. It was at this time We-pohng became fluent in English and was bestowed the name M'Gill (and its derivatives) by the captain as "a mark of his claim on the boy." Jack McGill (ice Hockey, Born 1921)
John George "Big Jack" McGill (September 19, 1921 – January 13, 1994) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League between 1942 and 1947. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1941 to 1954, was spent in various minor leagues. Playing career Born in Edmonton, Alberta, McGill registered 19 points in his first 13 games with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. He spent parts of two more seasons with the Bruins, finishing the remainder of his career in the AHL and other minor leagues. In 97 regular season NHL games, McGill recorded 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points. John James McGill, Sr. (November 3, 1909 – August 21, 1988) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played 134 games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens between 1934 and 1937. Before turning professional, he spent several years in the Ottawa City Hockey League and Montreal City Hockey League. He was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1909. John McGill (bishop)
John McGill (November 4, 1809 – January 14, 1872) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Richmond in Virginia from 1850 until his death in 1872. Biography Early life The oldest of ten children, John McGill was born on November 4, 1809, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to James and Lavinia (née Dougherty) McGill, immigrants from County Donegal, Ireland. Following the birth of their sixth child, his parents moved the family to Bardstown, Kentucky, in 1819. At age 11, McGill entered St. Joseph's College, where he studied the classics. In 1824, wanting to go into the priesthood, he went to St. Thomas' Seminary in Bardstown. However, he dropped out after two years to study law under future Kentucky Governor Charles A. Wickliffe in Bardstown After getting his law license, McGill moved to New Orleans to practice law. John Jones McGill
John Jones "J. J." McGill (June 22, 1860 – November 20, 1942) was an industrialist and philanthropist from Montreal, Quebec, and a prominent member of the English Speaking Community of Montreal. He was a major shareholder in, and later manager and director of the Dominion Oil Cloth and Linoleum Company a2200 St. Catherine Street East in Montreal He was born on June 22, 1860, in Montreal, Canada East, the son of David McGill of Lanarkshire, Scotland, and Jane Walker of Montreal. Following his emergence into business with Dominion Oil Cloth, McGill became the manager of the Canadian Rubber Company (later called the Dominion Rubber Company). John McGill (March 1752 December 31, 1834) was a Scottish born military officer and public official in Upper Canada. McGill is not related to James McGill, namesake of McGill University, who also had a brother named John McGill (1746-1797) who was a merchant in Montreal. Early life and military career Born in Auckland, Scotland in 1752, McGill was deployed to Virginia in 1773 with the British Army as Lieutenant in the Queen’s Own Loyal Virginia Regiment (formed 1775 by Lord Dunmore in Norfolk, Virginia but disbanded in New York in 1776) and later merged into the Queen’s Ranger. After the American Revolution Captain McGill settled with his wife Catherine in Parrytown, New Brunswick and finally York, Upper Canada in 1792.
