John Joseph McCarthy (April 25, 1934 – May 9, 2020) was an American basketball player and coach. A point guard, he played college basketball and was an All-American at Canisius College. He was selected by the Rochester Royals in the 1956 NBA draft. He played a total of six seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA)—two for the Royals, three for the St. Louis Hawks, and one for the Boston Celtics. McCarthy is the first of only four players in NBA history to record a triple-double in his playoff debut, with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists against the Minneapolis Lakers on March 16, 1960; he was later joined by Magic Johnson in 1980, LeBron James in 2006 and Nikola Jokic in 2019. John McCarthy DD (1 November 1858 — 18 August 1950) was an Irish-born Roman Catholic priest who served as Bishop of Sandhurst in Victoria, Australia, from 1917 until his death in 1950. John McCarthy was born in Fermoyle, Co. Clare, educated at Ballyvaughan and St Flannan's College, the Killaloe diocesan college, in Ennis before going to the Irish College in Paris from 1877 until 1883, studying theology and philosophy, he was ordained a priest in 1883. He served as a priest in Galway, Ireland, before 1890 when he moved to Melbourne, Australia. He served in the Woodend and St Kilda parishes before becoming private secretary to Archbishop Carr. John Shane McCarthy (19 November 1989 – 9 September 2012) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club and Port Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Playing career Drafted by Collingwood with the 31st selection in the 2007 National Draft, McCarthy was a midfielder. He made his debut late in the 2008 AFL season and held his position for the last six matches of the year, including two finals. He struggled to maintain his place in the Collingwood side in 2009 and 2010, playing only two games in each season due to poor form and injuries. In each year, however, he returned to the senior side at the end of the year, playing in the qualifying final in 2009 and being named as an emergency for the 2010 AFL Grand Final. John Frederick George McCarthy (born 30 March 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne Football Club, North Melbourne and Fitzroy Lions, Fitzroy in the Australian Football League, VFL/AFL. Originally from Wales, McCarthy is one of the most successful Australian rules football players to have been born overseas. Between 1989 and 1993 he represented Tasmania regularly at Interstate matches in Australian rules football, interstate football. McCarthy grew up in Tasmania and played his early football with North Hobart and developed into a key position player.
