John McAlpine
Sir John Kenneth McAlpine (21 July 1906 – 11 January 1984) was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. He was the Member of Parliament for Selwyn from 1946 to 1966, when he retired. Biography McAlpine was born in Christchurch in 1906, the son of a sheepfarmer – Walter Kenneth McAlpine. He received his education at Christ's College in Christchurch. After school, he worked at his father's high-country station at Craigieburn, New Zealand in the Southern Alps east of Arthur's Pass. He became the manager of that station in 1929 and later lived at Spye, a locality in North Canterbury near Omihi, where his father had farmed. McAlpine married Lesley Hay in 1935; she was a descendant of Ebenezer Hay of Pigeon Bay who was the earliest white settler in Canterbury. The Te Manatū Waka Ministry of Transport is the public service department of New Zealand charged with advising the Government of New Zealand, government on transport policy. History The Ministry was established in 1968 with a merger of the then Transport Department and the Civil Aviation Department. William Dickie
William James Dickie (10 April 1869 – 24 June 1921) was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand, and opposition Whip. Biography Dickie was one of six children; he was born in Cobden, Westland, on 10 April 1869 to William Dickie (who had arrived in New Zealand in the late 1850s from Menstrie, Scotland) and Mary Dent, who were early settlers to Greymouth. He farmed with Arthur Ingham Dent from 1902 in Lyndhurst near Ashburton. He won the Selwyn electorate in 1911, and again in December 1914. The electorate was abolished for the 1919 election, and he was defeated in 1919 by William Nosworthy standing for Ashburton. John Bowie Gordon (23 July 1921 – 17 March 1991), known as Peter Gordon, was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. Biography Gordon was born in Stratford in 1921 to Stratford doctors William and Doris Gordon. Like his two brothers, he attended St Andrew's College, Christchurch, where he was a boarder from 1935 to 1937. He then attended Lincoln College and the Nuffield School in farming in Crookston, Minnesota. In World War II, he was a flight lieutenant and pilot for the Royal New Zealand Air Force. After the war, he was a farmer and joined many organisations, where he had leading roles with the West Otago A & P Association (president), Farmers' Mutual Insurance (director, 1952–1960), and Shaw, Savill & Company (member of the New Zealand Advisory Board, 1956–1960). Seldom known to anyone by anything other than "Mick", he was a major organizational figure in the Labour Party's early history and went on to become a significant politician in his own right as an MP and cabinet minister.
