John May (footballer, Born 1878)
John May (15 April 1878 – 25 July 1933) was a Scottish footballer who played for Abercorn, Derby County, Rangers, Morton and Scotland. Football career Club May played as a left half-back (comparable to a modern midfielder) and started his career at Bo'ness followed by Wishaw Thistle and Paisley club Abercorn, before signing for Derby County. Whilst there he played in two losing FA Cup finals (1899 and 1903). May made 179 league appearances for Derby, scoring 17 goals. He joined Rangers in May 1904 and went on to play 148 times in the Scottish Football League and Scottish Cup, however, his spell at the club coincided almost exactly with a period when rivals Celtic were dominant, and May did not claim a winner's medal in either of the major competitions before he moved on to Morton in 1910. Johnny May
Johnny May (born 1945) is a Canadian Inuit, Inuk bush pilot living in Kuujjuaq, known as being the first Inuk pilot in eastern Canada. He is credited with saving the lives of many Inuit in search-and-rescue missions and operating medevac airplane services to transport sick Inuit to health centres. May is the older brother of Canadian Governor General of Canada, Governor General, Mary Simon. Family His father was a non-Inuit manager of the Hudson Bay Company trading post in Fort Severight (now Kangiqsualujjuaq), while his mother was a local Inuk. John Wilder May (1819–1883) was an American jurist who served as chief justice of the Boston Municipal Court and District Attorney of Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Early life May was born on January 28, 1819, in Attleboro, Massachusetts to Lemuel and Esther Wilder May. His father served as a member of the Massachusetts Governor's Council and both chambers of the Massachusetts General Court. May graduated from Phillips Academy and the University of Vermont. After college, May farmed for a couple of years before returning to Attleboro to work as a school teacher. In 1850, May married Elizabeth Thurston Farnham, a cousin from Bangor, Maine. Sir John Douglas May, PC (28 June 1923 – 15 January 1997) was a British Court of Appeal judge appointed by the British Government to investigate the miscarriages of justice related to the Maguire Seven and other miscarriages linked to IRA bombing offences. Life and career May was educated at Clifton College and Balliol College, Oxford, where he was a Scholar. During World War II, he served with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1947 and took silk in 1965. He was appointed to the High Court and assigned to the Queen's Bench Division in 1972, receiving the customary knighthood. In 1982, he was made a Lord Justice of Appeal and made a Privy Counsellor, serving until 1989. The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre was the murder of seven members and associates of Chicago's North Side Gang that occurred on Saint Valentine's Day 1929. The men were gathered at a Lincoln Park, Chicago garage on the morning of February 14, 1929. They were lined up against a wall and shot by four unknown assailants, two dressed as police officers. The murders resulted from the competition for control of organized crime in the city during Prohibition between the largely Irish North Siders, headed by George "Bugs" Moran, and their largely Italian Chicago Outfit rivals led by Al Capone. The perpetrators have never been conclusively identified, but former members of the Egan's Rats gang working for Capone are suspected of involvement; others have said that members of the Chicago Police Department who allegedly wanted revenge for the killing of a police officer's son played a part.
