John Marriott (poet)
John Marriott (1780–1825) was an English poet and clergyman. Marriott was born at Cotesbach, Cottesbach, in 1780, and educated at Rugby School, Rugby, and Christ Church, Oxford. He was the second of two who obtained honours in the schools in 1802, the first year in which there was a public examination for honours at Oxford. He was also Student of Christ Church, and for about two years a private tutor in the family of the Duke of Buccleuch. The Duke presented him to the Rectory of Church Lawford, Warwickshire. This benefice he retained to his death, although his wife's poor health compelled him to reside in Devonshire, where he was successively curate of St. Lawrence and other parishes in Exeter, and of Broadclyst, near Exeter, where he died March 31, 1825. His published works include a volume of ''Sermons'' which he issued in 1818, and a posthumous volume of ''Sermons'', published by his sons in 1838. John Marriott (British Politician)
Sir John Arthur Ransome Marriott (17 August 1859 – 6 June 1945) was a British educationist, historian, and Conservative member of parliament (MP). Marriott taught modern history at the University of Oxford from 1884 to 1920. He was an Honorary fellow, formerly fellow, lecturer and tutor in modern History, of Worcester College, Oxford. He was the Conservative MP for Oxford from 1917 to 1922, and for York from 1923 to 1929. After defeat in 1929, he retired from active politics. During the course of his lifetime, Marriott wrote more than forty books on British and European history, as well as current political subjects. He was knighted in 1924. Jack Marriott (Royal Navy Officer)
Captain John Peter Ralph Marriott CMG (28 November 1879 – 21 December 1938) was a British Royal Navy officer. Marriott was the son of Major Charles Frederick Marriott of the British Army and his wife Isabella (née Jerningham). He married Margaret Murray, daughter of the oceanographer Sir John Murray, and they had two sons, John and Peter. In 1894, he joined the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet, and he was promoted to lieutenant on 1 April 1902. As a junior officer he was posted to the sloop HMS ''Beagle'' on 1 July 1902, serving on her in the South Atlantic. Later, he served in the light cruiser HMS ''Hyacinth'', flagship of the East Indies and Egyptian Squadron, the armoured cruiser HMS ''Drake'', flagship of the 5th Cruiser Squadron, and the cadet training cruiser HMS ''Cornwall''. John Marriott (actor)
John Marriott (September 30, 1893 – April 5, 1977) was an American actor of the stage, film and screen, whose career spanned five decades. His acting career began on the stage in Cleveland, prior to his moving to New York City, where he was a regular performer on the Broadway stage. In the 1940s he also began to perform in films, when he reprised his role from the hit Broadway play, ''The Little Foxes'', in the William Wyler movie of the same name, starring Bette Davis. While he appeared infrequently in films (only ten during his career), he was quite active in theater, both on Broadway and in regional productions. Major-general (United Kingdom), Major General Sir John Charles Oakes Marriott, (29 June 1895 – 11 September 1978) was a senior British Army officer who served during the First World War and again in the Second World War. Military career John Marriott was born in Stowmarket, Suffolk, on 29 June 1895. John Marriott (Australian Politician)
John Edward Marriott (16 February 1913 – 13 April 1994) was an Australian politician. Born in Elliott, Tasmania, the fourth son of Frank Marriott and Alice Maud , he was educated at Launceston Church Grammar School and later in Hobart at The Hutchins School before joining the military in 1939. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in June 1940 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in July 1942. He was demobilised in October 1945 as an honorary captain.. He was a staff member with the Tasmanian Liberal Party from 1945 to 1949, and was Secretary to the Tasmanian Opposition Leader 1949–1953. In 1953, he was appointed to the Australian Senate as a Liberal Senator for Tasmania following the death of Senator Jack Chamberlain.
