John Maggio (director)
John Maggio is an American documentary film director, writer and producer. He is best known for his films '' The Perfect Weapon'' ( HBO), ''Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis'' (HBO) and '' The Newspaperman'' (HBO) as well as his work with the PBS series ''American Experience'' and Frontline. Life and career Maggio began his career as a musician as one of the founding members of the band, The Crosswalk with Cody ChesnuTT. Their debut album, ''Venus Loves A Melody'' was produced by Hollywood Records in 1999 with the legendary mixer Bob Clearmountain. After the band was dropped from their label Maggio pursued a career in documentary film and has been a partner at Brooklyn based film company Ark Media since 2003. Independent Spirit Awards
The Independent Spirit Awards (abbreviated Spirit Awards and originally known as the FINDIE or Friends of Independents Awards), founded in 1984, are awards dedicated to independent filmmakers. Winners were typically presented with Poly(methyl methacrylate), acrylic glass pyramids containing suspended shoestrings representing the bare budgets of independent films. Since 2006, winners have received a metal trophy depicting a bird with its wings spread sitting atop of a pole with the shoestrings from the previous design wrapped around the pole. American Experience
''American Experience'' is a television program airing on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the United States. The program airs documentaries, many of which have won awards, about important or interesting events and people in American history. The series premiered on October 4, 1988 and was originally titled ''The American Experience'', but the article "The" was dropped during a later rebrand and image update. The show has had a presence on the Internet since 1995, and more than 100 ''American Experience'' programs are accompanied by their own internet websites, which have more background information on the subjects covered as well as teachers' guides and educational companion materials. Slamdance Film Festival
The Slamdance Film Festival is an annual film festival focused on emerging artists. The annual week-long festival takes place in Park City, Utah, in late January and is the main event organized by the year-round Slamdance organization, which also hosts a screenplay competition, workshops, screenings throughout the year and events with an emphasis on independent films with budgets under US$1 million.
