John Macphail Scholarship
The John Macphail Scholarship is an annual rugby union scholarship award in Scotland. It was first given to talented young players; and was later the scholarship also extended to coaches seeking development. The scholarship is named after the former Scotland international rugby union player John Macphail, who died in 2004. The scholarship is a 5 month immersive rugby union programme abroad. Previously award winners have gone to New Zealand, recent award winners now go to South Africa for the programme. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the scholarship was not awarded in 2020 or 2021. Rugby Union
Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with the ball in hand. In its most common form, a game is played between two teams of 15 players each, using an oval-shaped ball on a rectangular field called a pitch. The field has H-shaped goalposts at both ends. Gregor Hunter
Gregor Hunter (born 26 September 1991) is a Scotland Club XV international player. In 2012 he was awarded the Macphail Scholarship and spent four months playing club rugby in New Zealand. Hunter joined Edinburgh as an elite development player in the summer of 2011 having come through the Scotland age grades. His time at the club was severely effected by injuries, most seriously ruled out for the whole of the 2013–14 season after injuring his knee playing for his assigned club Hawick RFC in August 2013. With his gametime hampered he was unable to earn a renewed contract at the end of the season under new coach Alan Solomons, who had only seen him play during a short pre-season, and he was released along with other fly-halves Piers Francis and Harry Leonard in the summer of 2014. Mike Blair
Michael Robert Leighton Blair (born 20 April 1981) is a Scottish rugby union coach who was formerly a professional player. He is the head coach of Edinburgh. He played at scrum-half for Glasgow Warriors, Newcastle Falcons, CA Brive and Edinburgh Rugby. He represented the Scotland national side 85 times, as well as the touring with the British & Irish Lions in 2009. He retired from playing on 21 April 2016 aged 35. He then became an assistant coach with Glasgow Warriors and then an assistant coach of the Scottish national team. He was the first Scottish player to be nominated for the title of IRB World Player of the Year. Ross McCann
Ross McCann (born 30 October 1997) is a Scottish rugby player who plays as a winger. From a sporting family, he and his brothers Ali McCann, who is a footballer who plays for Preston North End F.C., and Lewis McCann who plays for Dunfermline F.C., are all from Edinburgh, born to an English mother and a Northern Irish father. Ross McCann went to school in Cramond and then the Royal High School, Edinburgh and was a school friend of Charlie Shiel with whom he also played for the Royal High Corstorphine RFC and represented the under-20s for Scotland together. Patrick Kelly (born 18 October 1995) is a Scotland 7s professional rugby union player who plays for Glasgow Warriors. He previously played for London Scottish. Kelly plays at centre. Rugby Union career Amateur career Kelly was at Millburn Academy in Inverness before winning a scholarship to Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh at the age of 15. He captained Merchiston to the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Cup final in 2012. He played amateur rugby with Highland RFC. Duncan Hodge
Duncan Hodge (born 18 August 1974) is a Scottish former internationalist rugby union player. He gained 26 full caps for Scotland. Playing career Hodge was born in Dumfries, Scotland and educated at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh. He went on to represent Durham as a student, competing in the same team as Will Greenwood and Tim Stimpson. As a 19-year-old he was given the choice of touring Zimbabwe and South Africa with Scotland's National Cricket team, or playing under-21 national rugby and completing his university exams.. Ben Cairns
Ben Cairns (born 29 September 1985 in Leeds) is a former Scotland rugby union international who played for Edinburgh Rugby in the Pro12. Cairns' position of choice is as a Centre and he can also operate at Full-back and on the Wing. He won his First Cap for Scotland in Rosario against Argentina and then won his Second in Buenos Aires against the same Opponents a Week later. Callum Hunter-Hill
Callum Hunter-Hill (born 27 February 1997 in Melrose, Scotland) is a Scottish rugby union player who plays for Saracens. He typically plays second-row. Shade Munro
Donald Shade Munro (born 19 November 1966, Paisley, Scotland) is a Scottish rugby union player, who played at lock/second row. Playing He spent two stints in New Zealand, in 1987 he played for club side Greytown where he went on to represent the provincial team, Wairarapa Bush in a Ranfurly Shield Challenge against the mighty Auckland, which included 14 current All Blacks at the time.
