John MacDonald (Rosskeen)
John MacDonald (1860–1947) was a Free Church of Scotland Minister who served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1915. Life He was born in Applecross in 1860, the son of John MacDonald, a seaman, and his wife Mary. He studied at Glasgow University then at the Free Church Training College in Glasgow. He was ordained as a minister of the Free Church of Scotland at Acharacle in 1891. in 1895 he was translated to Raasay. In the Union of 1900 he remained in the Free Church. He transferred to Rosskeen in April 1908 and remained there for the rest of his life. In 1915 he succeeded the Rev Finlay MacRae as Moderator of the General Assembly. He died on 22 April 1947 and is buried in Rosskeen Burial Ground. Family In September 1891, in Perth, he married Jane ("Jeannie") MacGregor (1871-1939) from Fortingall. Rosskeen is a parish in Ross and Cromarty on the Cromarty Firth in northern Scotland, containing the settlements of Invergordon, Bridgend and Saltburn, Ross and Cromarty, Saltburn. It lies on the A9 between Inverness and Thurso. Finlay MacRae (moderator)
Finlay MacRae (1857–1939) was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland who served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1914/15. Life He was born on 2 November 1857 in Applecross the son of Norman MacRae and Margaret MacNair. His training and early life is unclear and he probably had a different career before joining the church. In 1892 he was ordained by the Free Church of Scotland in the church at Knockbain in Ross and Cromarty. In the Union of 1900 he remained in the Free Church of Scotland. In 1909 he was called to serve in the linked parishes of Poolewe and Aultbea but this was denied by the Assembly. In August 1911 he translated to Plockton. In 1915 he succeeded Very Rev Samuel Lyle Orr as Moderator of the General Assembly. He died on 26 April 1939 at Glenshiel and is buried in Kirkton churchyard in Lochalsh. Camden Town (), often shortened to Camden, is a district of northwest London, England, north of Charing Cross. Fortingall
Fortingall is a small village in highland Perthshire, Scotland, in Glen Lyon. Its nearest sizable neighbours are Aberfeldy and Kenmore. Its Gaelic name is ''Fartairchill'' (lit. "Escarpment Church"—i.e. "church at the foot of an escarpment or steep slope"). Local legend claims that it was the birthplace of Pontius Pilate, although he was born well before the Roman conquest and became famous in the biblical account of Jesus's death 30 years before the Romans first reached this part of Scotland. A number of other locations, including villages in Spain and Germany, make similar claims. It is also famous for the Fortingall Yew, the village's churchyard yew tree that could be over 5,000 years old, and thus one of the oldest living things in Europe. The moderator of the General Assembly is the chairperson of a General Assembly, the highest court of a Presbyterian or Reformed church. Kirk sessions and presbyteries may also style the chairperson as moderator. The Oxford Dictionary states that a Moderator may be a "Presbyterian minister presiding over an ecclesiastical body". The Free Church of Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: ''An Eaglais Shaor'', ) is an evangelical, Calvinist denomination in Scotland. It was historically part of the original Free Church of Scotland that remained outside the union with the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland in 1900. Now, it remains a distinct Presbyterian denomination in Scotland. Free Church Of Scotland (1843–1900)
The Free Church of Scotland is a Scottish denomination which was formed in 1843 by a large withdrawal from the established Church of Scotland in a schism known as the Disruption of 1843. In 1900, the vast majority of the Free Church of Scotland joined with the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland to form the United Free Church of Scotland (which itself mostly re-united with the Church of Scotland in 1929). In 1904, the House of Lords judged that the constitutional minority that did not enter the 1900 union were entitled to the whole of the church's patrimony, the Free Church of Scotland acquiesced in the division of those assets, between itself and those who had entered the union, by a Royal Commission in 1905. Despite the late founding date, Free Church of Scotland leadership claims an unbroken succession of leaders going all the way back to the Apostles.
