John Lovell (sailor)
John C. Lovell (born October 11, 1967) is an American competitive sailor, four-time Olympian, and Olympic silver medalist. He was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Career Lovell has competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics, 2000 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympics, and the 2008 Summer Olympics. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Lovell, along with his partner Charlie Ogletree Charles S. Ogletree (born October 11, 1967 in Greenville, North Carolina) is an American competitive sailor, collegiate All-American, four-time Olympian, and Olympic silver medalist. Southern Yacht Club
The Southern Yacht Club is located in New Orleans, Louisiana's West End neighborhood, on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Established on July 21, 1849, it is the fifthe oldest yacht club in the United States and a founding member of the Gulf Yachting Association. Sailing Southern Yacht Club is an extremely active sailing club and is the organizing body for the Race to the Coast, the oldest point to point regatta in the Western Hemisphere. Initially raced on July 4, 1850, the race continues to this day with the course starting on the shores of New Orleans on Lake Pontchartrain and finishing in Gulfport, Mississippi. Tornado (sailboat)
The Tornado is a double handed multihull class recognised as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation. It was used for the Catamaran discipline at the Sailing at the Summer Olympics, Olympic Games from 1976 to 2008. Design The boat was designed in 1967 by Rodney March from the Isle of Sheppey, England. At the IYRU Olympic Catamaran Trials for international status, where it defeated other catamarans. To increase its performance even further, the Tornado was modified in 2001, with a new sail plan which included a spinnaker and spinnaker boom, as well as an increased sail area of the existing sails. An additional Trapeze (sailing), trapeze was also added, and the jib was made self tacking. The Tornado is among the fastest double handed catamarans, with an ISAF Small Catamaran Handicap Rating System rating of 0.934 and a Portsmouth Yardstick, D-PN of 59.0.
