John Lord (historian)
John Lord (September 10, 1810 – December 15, 1894) was an American historian and lecturer. Biography Born September 10, 1810 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1833 and then entered the Andover Theological Seminary, where in his second year he wrote a series of lectures on the Dark Ages, which he delivered the next fall during a tour through northern New York. After graduating at Andover he became an agent for the American Peace Society. Though not ordained to the ministry, he was called to a Congregational Church at New Marlborough, Massachusetts, and then to one at Stockbridge, Massachusetts. In 1840 he gave up his pastoral duties to become a public lecturer and spend time on literary activities. In 1843-46, he was in England giving lectures on the Middle Ages, and on his return to the United States continued to lecture for many years in the principal towns and cities, giving over 6,000 lectures in all. John Lord (footballer, Born 1937)
John Lord (2 April 1937 – 30 July 2021) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Although he played his early football in Echuca he was recruited from the Lismore Football Club on the Western Plains of Victoria where he was stationed with Elders Smith, now Elders Limited. A strong mark, Lord was used by coach Norm Smith in both defence and attack. He played most of his early football down back and was a Melbourne premiership player in 1957, 1959 and 1960. John Chase Lord
John Chase Lord, AM (9 August 1805 – 21 January 1877) was an American Presbyterian minister, lawyer, writer, and poet well known for his involvement in the nativist and anti-Catholic movements in Upstate New York during the mid-1800s. He was also a leading theologian of conservative Presbyterianism in the mid-19th century, serving as Moderator of the 63rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America in 1852. John Wesley Lord (August 23, 1902 – October 8, 1989) was an American bishop of the Methodist Church, elected in 1948. Lord was active in the Civil Rights Movement, he marched with Martin Luther King, he met in the White House with John F. Kennedy, and he pushed for the racial integration of the Methodist Church. He was a vice president of the National Council of Churches and was active in the World Health Organization. Sir John Owen, 1st Baronet (1776 – 6 February 1861), born John Lord, was a British Tory (later Conservative Party) politician from Wales. He sat as a Member of Parliament (MP) for over fifty years. His wealth came from coal mining but he lost most of his fortune as a result of costly electoral campaigns in Pembrokeshire, most notably those of 1831. John Lord (cricketer)
John Carr Lord (29 April 1844 – 25 May 1911) was an Australian first-class cricketer and racehorse breeder. The son of James Lord, he was born at Hobart in April 1844. He was educated in England at Portsmouth. As a 19 year old, he played in Hampshire's inaugural first-class match against Sussex at Southampton in 1864. In what was a 10 wicket defeat for Hampshire, Lord opened the batting in Hampshire's first innings and was dismissed by for 11 runs by James Lillywhite, while in their second innings he batted at number 10 and was unbeaten on 4. Soon after he returned to Australia, later playing in a first-class match for Tasmania against Victoria at Launceston in 1873. Batting twice in the match, he was dismissed in the Tasmanian first innings for 11 runs by Daniel Wilkie, while in their second innings he was dismissed for 3 runs by Charles Allee. John Keast Lord
John Keast Lord (1818–1872) was an English veterinarian and traveller, known as a naturalist, journalist and author. Life He was probably the son of Edward Lord, and was born in Cornwall. He was brought to Tavistock, Devon, with his brother, William Barry Lord, and educated by an uncle named Luscombe. Lord was apprenticed to Messrs. Edgecombe & Stannes, chemists in Tavistock, and then entered the Royal Veterinary College, London, 4 November 1842; and received his diploma 29 May 1844. He established himself as a veterinary surgeon at Tavistock; but he began to drink, and he suddenly disappeared. Lord is said to have made a whaling voyage and been shipwrecked, and to have been for some years a trapper in Minnesota and the Hudson Bay fur countries.
