John Long (MP For Cricklade)
John Long of Draycot Cerne (c. 1419 – 20 September 1478) was an English landowner and member of parliament. Born in Wiltshire, the son of Robert Long and Margaret Godfrey, he was elected Member of Parliament for Cricklade in 1442 and in 1449 was an Elector for Wiltshire. He died on 20 September 1478History of Parliament pp.550-1 and is buried at Draycot Cerne, Wiltshire. He married Margaret Wayte who, according to the printed Long family pedigree, was his half-sister. Johnny Long (September 12, 1914 (disputed) – October 31, 1972) was an American violinist and bandleader, known as "The Man Who's Long on Music". He was raised on a farm in Newell, North Carolina, currently a subdivision of Charlotte. He started practicing with the violin at the age of six, but injured two fingers on his left hand when he was bitten by a pig. He then learned to use his right hand to play the violin, and continued to do so until his death. Music career As a freshman at Duke University, Long joined with ten other freshmen to create a school band named The Duke Collegians. He also joined Sigma Nu Fraternity. John Luther Long (January 1, 1861 – October 31, 1927) was an American lawyer and writer best known for his short story "Madame Butterfly", which was based on the recollections of his sister, Jennie Correll, who had been to Japan with her husband—a Methodist missionary. Biography Born in Hanover, Pennsylvania, Long had been admitted to the bar in Philadelphia on October 29, 1881, and become a practicing lawyer. On January 17, 1882, he married Mary Jane Sprenkle. He died at age 66 on October 31, 1927, having spent the last two months of his life at a sanatorium in Clifton Springs, New York. The obituary in ''The New York Times'' of November 1, 1927, quoted his own interpretation of himself as "a sentimentalist, and a feminist and proud of it". John Dixon Long
John Dixon Long (September 26, 1817 – 1894) was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a leading U.S. abolitionist. His 1857 book, ''Pictures of Slavery in Church and State'', was influential in abolitionist circles. Long was born in New Town, Maryland to John W. Long, a slaveholder and former sea-captain. He credited his mother Sally Laws Henderson Long with inspiring his early antislavery sentiments. A devout member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, she died in 1828. Long's father died in 1834, leaving Long to support two sisters and brother. Long was received into the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1835 and became a minister in 1839. Health problems forced him to give up his ministerial post in 1848. John Long (born 1950), is an American country blues singer, fingerstyle guitarist, harmonica player and songwriter. He performs in a pre-war acoustic blues style, although his material is contemporary and mainly composed by Long and his elder brother. His mentor and inspiration was Homesick James. John Long (Gaelic Footballer)
John Long (born 1952) is an Irish retired Gaelic footballer. His league and championship career with the Kerry senior team spanned six seasons from 1972 to 1977. Long made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he was picked on the Kerry minor team having previously won an All-Ireland schools title, the Hogan Cup, with St. Brendan's Killarney in 1969.
