John Lewis (California Politician)
John R. Lewis (born November 2, 1954) is a Republican politician from California who represented Orange County in the California State Senate from 1991 until 2000 and in the California State Assembly from 1980 until 1991. He currently serves as the President of the Lewis Consulting Group. During his time in the State Senate, Lewis served as the Vice Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee. Lewis was first elected to the State Senate in 1991 after John Seymour resigned after being appointed to the United States Senate by Governor Pete Wilson. In the Republican primary, Lewis defeated both Assemblymembers Nolan Frizzelle and Doris Allen of Cypress, California who later served briefly as Speaker of the Assembly. Cypress, California
Cypress is a city in northwestern Orange County within Southern California. Its population was 50,151 at the 2020 census. History The first people living in the area now known as Cypress were the Gabrieleno, a Native American tribe of the Tongva people, who were displaced soon after the arrival of the Europeans. The government of Spain then possessed the land until Mexico gained its independence in 1821. Mexico then lost Alta California to the United States during the period following the Bear Flag Revolt and the Mexican–American War. The original Spanish dons held immense tracts of land throughout California, which were given in lieu of pay to Spanish soldiers. Manuel Nieto was one of the early Spanish dons or landowners in the area. Doris Jean Allen (May 26, 1936 – September 22, 1999) was an American politician from California. Allen served in the California Assembly from 1982 to 1995, representing part of Orange County, and as speaker of that body from June 5 to September 14, 1995, before being recalled from office. Allen was the first woman to be elected to that office. Early life and education Allen was born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Cypress, California. Nolan Frizzelle
Nolan Frizzelle (October 16, 1921 – January 31, 2013) was a Republican politician who represented Orange County in the California State Assembly from 1980 until 1992. In 1992, he was defeated for renomination by Doris Allen after they were redistricted into the same district. Legislative career Frizzelle's political activity began in 1954 in Pasadena, California, where he led a movement to challenge the Pasadena public school decision to stop enforcing correct spelling in grammar school. That challenge culminated in the removal of the superintendent. After a move to Orange County in 1955, Frizzelle became active in the Christian Anticommunism Crusade and built a network of conservative contacts in the area. Peter Barton Wilson (born August 23, 1933) is an American attorney and politician who served as the 36th governor of California from 1991 to 1999. A member of the Republican Party, he also served as a United States senator from California between 1983 and 1991, and as the 29th mayor of San Diego from 1971 to 1983.
