John Leigh (Wisconsin Politician)
John Leigh (December 20, 1827 – October 5, 1893) was an American lumberman and politician. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Leigh emigrated to the United States in 1838 and settled in Maine. In 1850, Leigh moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then settled in the community of Leighton, in the town of Stiles, Oconto County, Wisconsin. He operated a saw mill and then a flour mill. John Leigh (doctor)
John Leigh, (8 June 1812 – 11 November 1888), was a British 19th-century chemist and surgeon in Manchester, becoming its first appointed Medical Officer of Health, having responsibility for Public Health. Early life John Leigh was born on 8 June 1812, probably at Foxdenton Hall in Chadderton but possibly in Liverpool. His father, Thomas, was a druggist and tea-dealer from Ashton-under-Lyne, whilst his mother, Hannah, came from Saddleworth. John said he was related to an ancient Cheshire family, the Leighs of West Hall, and thus also with the Earl of Bridgewater, but doubt has been cast on these claims. Leigh attended a school associated with Dukinfield Moravian Church and then pursued a career in medicine, being initially apprenticed to a doctor in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. From 1831, he studied at Thomas Turner's Pine Street medical school in Manchester and at Guy's Hospital, London, as well as working for a period as a clerk at the Manchester Infirmary. John Leigh (born 1965) is a New Zealand actor. He has had roles in New Zealand TV shows such as ''Shortland Street'', ''Mercy Peak'' and as Sparky in '' Outrageous Fortune''. He is a voice actor, and worked for the ''Power Rangers'' franchise since 2003 (after the franchise had moved to New Zealand). John Ernst Leigh was an ambassador for Sierra Leone to the United States who served during the Sierra Leone Civil War. Jack Leigh
John David Leigh II (November 8, 1948 – May 19, 2004) was an American photographer and author, known for the cover photograph on John Berendt's novel ''Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil''. The photograph featured the ''Bird Girl'' statue from Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia, where he is now buried. Leigh was a native of Savannah, and a graduate of the Savannah Country Day School and the University of Georgia. Already well known locally as a portrait and documentary photographer, Leigh was commissioned by Random House for the photograph. Leigh wrote and published five books on photography. John Leigh (1689–1726) was an Irish actor and dramatist. Stage career Leigh appeared as Demetrius in Thomas Shadwell's adaptation of ''Timon of Athens'', produced at Dublin's Smock Alley Theatre in 1714. Recruited by John Rich for London's newly erected theatre in Lincoln's Inn Fields, he played there on the opening night, 18 December 1714, as Captain Plume in ''The Recruiting Officer'' by George Farquhar. Sir John Leigh, 1st Baronet
Sir John Leigh, 1st Baronet (3 August 1884 – 28 July 1959) was a British mill-owner, who used his fortune to buy a newspaper and launch his career as a Conservative politician. Leigh, whose family resided for generations at Pennington was descended from a cadet branch of the Barons Leigh (of the first creation) and was educated at Manchester Grammar School. Leigh made his fortune in the Lancashire cotton industry. In February 1918, he was created a baronet ''of Altrincham in Cheshire'', and around 1921 he purchased the ''Pall Mall Gazette''. Sir John was rumoured at the time to be worth fourteen million pounds. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Clapham division of Wandsworth at a by-election in May 1922 after the resignation of the Conservative MP Sir Arthur du Cros, and held the seat until retiring at the 1945 general election. Newtown was a parliamentary borough located in Newtown on the Isle of Wight, which was represented in the House of Commons of England until 1707, then in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800, and finally in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. It was represented by two members of parliament (MPs), elected by the bloc vote system. The borough was abolished in the Great Reform Act of 1832, and from the 1832 general election its territory was included in the new county constituency of Isle of Wight.
