Sir John Lees, 1st Baronet (c. 1737– 3 September 1811) was Secretary of the Irish Post Office and Black Rod in Ireland. Family John Lees was born about 1737, probably at Cumnock in Ayrshire, the son of Adam Lees and his wife Agnes Goldie. He had married Mary, the eldest daughter of Robert Cathcart of Glandusk and together they had six sons Harcourt Lees (born 1 October 1777), 2nd Baronet, John Cathcart, barrister-at-law, Townsend (born 3 August 1779), Edward Smith Lees (born 30 March 1783), joint secretary, with his father, in the Irish Post Office and later, in Scotland, as secretary to the Postmaster General for Scotland, William Eden (born 5 August 1784), Thomas Orde (born 3 Jun 1788) and a daughter, Charlotte though Bayley Butler mentions two daughters and observes that Lees son's are named after people connected to his life. John Lees (artist)
John Lees (born February 3, 1943) is an American contemporary expressionist artist who works primarily in painting. Lees received the 2005 Francis J. Greenburger Award and has also received the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Hassam, Speicher, Betts and Symonds Art Purchase Award in 2010, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Grant in 1993 and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant in 1989. His paintings are included in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Fogg Art Museum, The New Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Arkansas Art Center, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Tucson Museum of Art. John Lees of Turf Lane, Royton, Lancashire was an English inventor who made a substantial improvement to machinery for carding cotton. He improved the carding machine in 1772 by adding a feeder to it in the form of a perpetually revolving cloth on which cotton wool was spread to convey the wool to the cylinder. On 25 June 1785, he proved this in the course of the trial concerning the validity of Richard Arkwright's second patent (dated 1775) for his cotton-spinning water frame. John Lees (ca 1740 – March 4, 1807) was a businessman, judge and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born in Scotland around 1740 and came to the town of Quebec with his family around 1761. With Alexander Dawson, he formed a company in 1773 that was involved in importing goods and supplying the British Army; they also speculated in land. In 1774, he signed a petition requesting a legislative assembly for the province. Lees served in the militia during the siege of the town by the American army during the American Revolution. In 1787, his company acquired the lease for the Saint-Maurice ironworks at Trois-Rivières. In 1792, Lees was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for Trois-Rivières; he was reelected in 1796, 1800 and 1804. He was also an honorary member of the Executive Committee from 1794 to 1804, becoming an active member in 1804 and serving until his death. John Lees was an English footballer who played for Derby County. Playing career Inside-right was another position where Derby County appeared to have a problem in the 1888-1889 Football league campaign. By the end of the season they had tried eight different players and the most any played in that position (in the Football League) was four. In the first eight League matches played by Derby County the club had already tried three players at inside-right, the latest having been William Chatterton. After the 6-2 thrashing at Everton Chatterton was out of favour and so John Lees was selected to make his debut on 3 November 1888 at Dudley Road, Wolverhampton, then home of high-flying Wolverhampton Wanderers. John Lees is a retired sports journalist who holds the record for completing the fastest coast-to-coast walk across the United States. Starting at Los Angeles City Hall on 11 April 1972, he walked for 53 days, 12 hours and 15 minutes to New York City Hall, finishing on 3 June 1972. Lees became the sports reporter and cricket commentator for various BBC radio stations in the south east of England, including BBC Sussex, BBC Surrey and BBC Southern Counties Radio, where he was often referred to as "the gentleman of sport". Jack Lees
Jack Lees (1884 – 11 August 1940) was a British Labour Party politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Belper in Derbyshire from 1929 to 1931. Born in West Rainton in County Durham, Lees became a coal miner and joined the Northumberland Miners' Association, eventually becoming a full-time union official. He contested Belper unsuccessfully at the 1924 general election, losing by over 4,000 votes to the sitting Conservative Party MP Herbert Wragg. At the 1929 election he took the seat with a majority of 2,955, but at the 1931 general election Wragg retook the seat with a majority of nearly 8,000.
