John Leahy (footballer)
John Patrick Leahy (7 March 1941 – 23 November 1980) was an Australian rules footballer who played two games for Melbourne during the 1961 season of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early life John Leahy was born in Geelong, Victoria to Alfred Ernest Leahy and Kathleen Leahy (née Gehrig)Victorian Death Certificate 27629/1980 on 7 March 1941. He was one of four brothers, two of which also played for Melbourne during the 1960s – Brian played in the 1960 Melbourne Premiership team while Terry won Melbourne's best and fairest in 1966. Football career Leahy joined his brother Brian at Melbourne in 1961, wearing the number 30 guernsey. He played two games – The Round 12 draw with Fitzroy and the Round 13 loss to Hawthorn. Later life At age 21 John married Nancy Faye Arthur and later had two children – Philip and Rodney. John Leahy died in North Melbourne on 22 November 1981. He was cremated three days later. Terry Leahy (footballer)
Terry Leahy (12 October 1946 – 29 November 2002) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne and South Melbourne in the VFL. His brothers John and Brian also played with Melbourne. Australian rules football career On Monday, 25 April 1966, Terry Leahy made his VFL debut in Melbourne's Round 1 loss to St Kilda at the MCG. He continued to play all of Melbourne's 18 games for the year, kicking a total of six goals and earning one Brownlow Medal vote. Leahy also won the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal for being voted Melbourne's best and fairest during the 1966 season. During the 1967 season Leahy only played eight games, kicking two goals in the process – one against Geelong in Round 2, the other during the Round 16 win against Footscray. Melbourne "dismissed" Leahy at the end of the 1967 season as a "disciplinary measure". Hawthorn Football Club
The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Mulgrave, Victoria, that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club was founded in 1902 in the inner-east suburb of Hawthorn, making it the youngest Victorian-based team in the AFL. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Trophy is an Australian rules football award presented annually to the player(s) adjudged the best and fairest at the Melbourne Football Club throughout the Victorian Football League/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL) season. The Melbourne Football Club was established in 1858 and was a foundation member of the Victorian Football Association, playing in the league from 1877 to 1896. After the formation of the Victorian Football League in 1896, Melbourne joined the league as a foundation club the next year and has competed in the league ever since. The inaugural Melbourne best and fairest winner was Allan La Fontaine in 1935, and he retained it the following season. Brian Leahy
Brian Peter 'Wrecker' Leahy (3 February 1943 – 24 January 2004) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1960s. His brothers John and Terry also played for Melbourne. Australian rules football career A strongly built half back, Leahy was noted for his bursts off the flanks. At age 15 he won the North Albury Football Club's best and fairest and was just 16 when signed up by Melbourne, spending 1959 in the reserves. On 18 April 1960 during the Round 1 clash with North Melbourne, Leahy became the 786th player to wear the Melbourne guernsey. He went on to play a further 11 matches with Melbourne during the 1960 season, including the Grand Final against Collingwood. 1961 VFL Season
The 1961 VFL season was the 65th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 15 April until 23 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Hawthorn Football Club for the first time, after it defeated by 43 points in the 1961 VFL Grand Final.
