The 1734 British general election returned members to serve in the House of Commons of the 8th Parliament of Great Britain to be summoned, after the merger of the Parliament of England and the Parliament of Scotland in 1707. Robert Walpole's increasingly unpopular Whig government lost ground to the Tories and the opposition Whigs, but still had a secure majority in the House of Commons. Newcastle-under-Lyme (UK Parliament Constituency)
Newcastle-under-Lyme is a constituency in northern Staffordshire created in 1354 and represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Aaron Bell of the Conservative Party. It was the last to be co-represented by a member of the Conservative Party when it was dual-member, before the 1885 general election which followed the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 coupled with the Reform Act 1884. In 1919 the local MP, Josiah Wedgwood, shifted his allegiance from the Liberal Party — the Lloyd George Coalition Liberals allying with the Conservatives — to the Labour Party and the seat elected the Labour candidate who has stood at each election for the next hundred years, a total of 29 elections in succession. John Ward, 1st Viscount Dudley And Ward
John Ward, 1st Viscount Dudley and Ward (6 March 1704 – 6 May 1774), known as John Ward until 1740 and as the 6th Baron Ward from 1740 to 1763, was a British Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1727 to 1734. Life Ward was the son of William Ward and the grandson of the Hon. William Ward (d. 1714), second son of Humble Ward, 1st Baron Ward. His mother was Mary, daughter of the Hon. John Grey, younger son of Henry Grey, 1st Earl of Stamford. He inherited the Willingsworth estate and the rest of the manor of Sedgley on the death of his father in 1720, and the entailed portion of the Dudley estates on the death of his cousin William Ward, 5th Baron Ward in 1740. He was returned to Parliament for Newcastle under Lyme in 1727, a seat he held until 1734. In 1740 he succeeded his second cousin as the sixth Baron Ward and entered the House of Lords. Baptist Leveson-Gower
Baptist Leveson-Gower (c. 1703–1782) was a British Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons for 34 years from 1727 to 1761. Leveson-Gower was the fourth son of John Leveson Gower, 1st Baron Gower, MP, and his wife Lady Catherine Manners, daughter of John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland. He entered Westminster School in May 1717, aged 13 and was admitted at St. John’s College, Cambridge on 22 April 1720, aged 16. At the 1727 British general election Leveson-Gower was returned as a Tory Member of Parliament at both Amersham and Newcastle-Under-Lyme, and chose to sit for Newcastle-under-Lyme on his family’s interest. He voted consistently against the Government. He was returned for Newcastle-under-Lyme in a contest at the 1734 British general election and unopposed at the 1741 British general election.
