John Lavin (trade Unionist)
John Lavin (1879 or 1880 – 6 August 1919) was an Irish trade unionist and socialist activist. Born in Ireland, Lavin studied theology at university. This study made him an atheist, and he decided to become a sailor. He traveled to San Francisco and settled in the city, joining both the Socialist Labor Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World.''Dictionary of Labour Biography'', vol.II, pp.38-39 Lavin's possessions were destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Early in the 1910s, he decided to return to Europe, and settled in Yorkshire, becoming a coal miner. He became active in the Yorkshire Miners' Association (YMA) and also joined the British Socialist Labour Party (SLP) and the Workers' International Industrial Union. The YMA asked him to stand for election in Pontefract, but he refused, as it would have required him to stand as a Labour Party candidate. The Irish ( ga, Muintir na hÉireann or ''Na hÉireannaigh'') are an ethnic group and nation native to the island of Ireland, who share a common history and culture. There have been humans in Ireland for about 33,000 years, and it has been continually inhabited for more than 10,000 years (see Prehistoric Ireland). Mansfield
Mansfield is a market town and the administrative centre of Mansfield District in Nottinghamshire, England. It is the largest town in the wider Mansfield Urban Area (followed by Sutton-in-Ashfield). It gained the Royal Charter of a market town in 1227. The town lies in the Maun Valley, north of Nottingham and near Sutton-in-Ashfield. Most of the 109,000 population live in the town itself (including Mansfield Woodhouse), with Warsop as a secondary centre. Mansfield is the one local authority in Nottinghamshire with a publicly elected mayor. History Roman to Mediaeval Period Settlement dates to the Roman period. Communist Party Of Great Britain
The Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) was the largest communist organisation in Britain and was founded in 1920 through a merger of several smaller Marxist groups. Many miners joined the CPGB in the 1926 general strike. In 1930, the CPGB founded the ''Daily Worker'' (renamed the ''Morning Star'' in 1966). In 1936, members of the party were present at the Battle of Cable Street, helping organise resistance against the British Union of Fascists. In the Spanish Civil War the CPGB worked with the USSR to create the British Battalion of the International Brigades, which party activist Bill Alexander commanded. In World War II, the CPGB mirrored the Soviet position, opposing or supporting the war in line with the involvement of the USSR. By the end of World War II, CPGB membership had nearly tripled and the party reached the height of its popularity. Warsop is a town and civil parish in the Mansfield district, Nottinghamshire, England, on the outskirts of the remnants of Sherwood Forest.OS Explorer Map 270: Sherwood Forest: (1:25 000): At the 2001 census it had a population of 12,365, reducing to 11,999 at the 2011 Census including Church Warsop, Meden Vale and Spion Kop.
