John Quincy Lane
John Quincy Lane (February 19, 1831 – July 13, 1903) was an American Union brevet brigadier general during the period of the American Civil War. He received his appointment as brevet brigadier general dated to March 13, 1865. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, he was admitted to the Zanesville Bar where he practiced law until the beginning of the Civil War when he was commissioned by Governor Yates to recruit soldiers for the 97th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. John Lane Bell
John Lane Bell (born March 25, 1945) is an Anglo-Canadian philosopher, mathematician and logician. He is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. His research includes such topics as set theory, model theory, lattice theory, modal logic, quantum logic, constructive mathematics, type theory, topos theory, infinitesimal analysis, spacetime theory, and the philosophy of mathematics. He is the author of more than 70 articles and of 13 books. In 2009, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). He made 103 appearances in the Football League for Birmingham City and Notts County. John Lane (publisher)
John Lane (14 March 1854 – 2 February 1925) was a British publisher who co-founded The Bodley Head with Charles Elkin Mathews. Career Originally from Devon, where he was born into a farming family, Lane moved to London in his teens. While working as a clerk at the Railway Clearing House, he acquired knowledge as an autodidact. After entering the London book trade, in 1887 he became co-founder with Elkin Mathews of The Bodley Head which originally was a bookshop dealing in antiquarian books. In 1894, still operating under the name of The Bodley Head, they began to publish books. Mathews left shortly afterwards and began to publish on his own as Elkin Mathews Ltd. and "returned to a great concentration on bookselling". John Bryant Lane
John Bryant Lane (1788–1868) was a Cornish painter. Biography Lane was born at Helston in Cornwall in 1788, the son of Samuel Lane, chemist and excise-man, and Margaret Baldwin his wife. He was educated at Truro until he was fourteen when his taste for art was noticed by Francis Basset, 1st Baron de Dunstanville and Basset of Tehidy, who gave him the means to practise it in London. Lane was bestowed a gold medal from the Society of Arts for an historical cartoon of ''The Angels Unbound''. In 1808 Lane exhibited at the Royal Academy an altarpiece for Lord de Dunstanville's church in Cornwall; in 1811 he produced ''Christ mocked by Pilate's Soldiers'' for Helston Guildhall, and in 1817 produced ''Eutychus'' for a church in London. John Lane (metallurgist)
John Lane (c. October 1678 – 1741) was an 18th-century doctor and metallurgist, who is said to have experimented with making metallic zinc, probably without result. He studied at the Exeter College, Oxford, and medicine at Leiden in 1702. He married Elizabeth Pollard, heiress of Marsh Baldon, Oxfordshire in 1713, who survived him, only dying in 1771 at the age of 83. In 1694, Lane and John Pollard (possibly his step father-in-law) became partners of Thomas Collins in copper works at Neath Abbey, but the partnership was dissolved in 1716.L.
