John Lance Arena is a 3,500 seat multi-purpose arena in Pittsburg, Kansas. It was built in 1971 and saw its first game played on December 4, 1971. Pittsburg is a city in Crawford County, Kansas, United States, located in southeast Kansas near the Missouri state border. It is the most populous city in Crawford County and southeast Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 20,646. It is home of Pittsburg State University. History On October 23, 1864, a wagon train of refugees had come from Fort Smith, Arkansas, and was escorted by troops from the 6th Kansas Cavalry under the command of Col. William Campbell. These were local men from Cherokee, Crawford, and Bourbon counties. Their enlistment was over, and they were on their way to Fort Leavenworth to be dismissed from service. Pittsburg State University (Pitt State or PSU) is a public university in Pittsburg, Kansas. It enrolls approximately 7,400 students (6,000 undergraduates and 1,400 graduate students) and is a member of the Kansas Board of Regents. History Pittsburg State University was founded in 1903 as the Auxiliary Manual Training Normal School, originally a branch of the State Normal School of Emporia (now Emporia State University). John Lance (basketball)
John F. Lance (October 29, 1897 – September 10, 1981) was an American football and college basketball coach. He served as the head football coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University from 1918 to 1921. Lance's greatest coaching feats occurred on the hardwood, where he amassed a career record of 643 wins and 345 losses serving as the head men's basketball coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State (1918–1921) and at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas (1922–1934, 1935–1963).
