He was one of the '' Worthies of Devon'' of the Devonshire biographer Prince (d.1723), who called him a "very free and liberal, ... prudent and discreet" benefactor of the town of Honiton in Devon. Origins He was the eldest son and heir of Nicholas Kirkham (1433/4-1515/16) of Blagdon, by his wife Joan Waye, daughter and heiress of Robert (or John) Waye of Marsh. 	John Kirkham (adventurer) John Charles Kirkham (c. 1835 – June 1876) was a British adventurer, hotelier and ship's steward who fought beside William Walker in Nicaragua and Charles George Gordon in China during the Taiping Rebellion before landing in Ethiopia at the beginning of the British Expedition to Abyssinia against Emperor Tewodros II in 1868. At the conclusion of the latter campaign, Kirkham stayed in the country and became the main Western advisor to Emperor Yohannes IV. He was instrumental in training Ethiopian troops to Western military standards, raising and drilling what became known as the Emperor's Disciplined Force. Kirkham's troops played a major role in the defeat of the 1871 invasion of Tigray by Yohannes's rival for the Ethiopian crown, Emperor Tekle Giyorgis II (Wagshum Gobeze), fighting with conspicuous success in the Battle of Adwa on 11 July. 	John Kirkham (bishop) John Dudley Galtrey Kirkham (20 September 1935 – 10 October 2019) was a British Anglican bishop. He was the Bishop of Sherborne in the last quarter of the 20th century and the first area bishop under the 1981–2009 area scheme. Early life and education Kirkham was born on 20 September 1935. He was educated at Lancing College, a private school in West Sussex. Between 1954 and 1956, after finishing school, he completed his military service with the Royal Hampshire Regiment and King's African Rifles. He then studied at Trinity College, Cambridge from 1956 to 1959, and at the theological college Westcott House, Cambridge from 1960 to 1962.
