John Kiriamiti
John Kiriamiti (born 14 February 1950) is a Kenyan former bank robber turned writer. Born in Thuita Village, Kamacharia Location of Murang'a District in Central Kenya, he is the second of the nine children of Albert and Anne Wanjiru Kiriamiti, both primary school teachers in Murang'a. Background Kiriamiti is best known as the writer of '' My Life in Crime'' and '' My Life with a Criminal: Milly's Story'', which were both a sensation with Kenyan youth in the late 1980s and '90s. ''My Life in Crime'' is a 1984 novel by Kenyan author John Kiriamiti. It is a fictionalized account of Kiriamiti's criminality in Kenya during the 1960s and 1970s. The novel details Kiriamiti's crimes under the alias Jack Zollo that led to his imprisonment. It is the first novel in Kiriamiti's ''My Life...'' trilogy, which is currently being made into a film. Background John Kiriamiti was a real-life criminal in Kenya during the 1960's and 1970's in the wake of the country's independence. Kiriamiti evaded the Kenyan police for all the crimes he committed until he was arrested in November 1970 on the eve of his wedding. He was charged and imprisoned on January 6, 1971 on counts of robbery. My Life in Crime was written and published while Kiriamiti was in jail. He was released in 1984, five months after the novel's publication. Kamiti Maximum Security Prison
Kamiti Maximum Security Prison is a prison in Nairobi County, Kenya. The prison is within Roysambu Constituency, Kasarani District, bordering Kiambu County. Originally named "Kamiti Downs", it sits in the middle of its own estates which lie fallow and untended. During the 1980s and early 1990s many political prisoners were held at Kamiti, including Hussein Onyango Obama, Kenneth Matiba, Raila Odinga, Koigi wa Wamwere, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Jonah Anguka and numerous others. Many executions have been carried out in Kamiti. Mau Mau rebel leader Dedan Kimathi was hanged by British colonial administration on 18 February 1957. Hezekiah Ochuka and Pancras Oteyo Okumu were executed there on 17 May 1987. ''My Life in Prison'' (2004) is the third novel in John Kiriamiti's Kenyan crime fiction series, following ''My Life as a Criminal'', and ''My Life with a Criminal: Milly's Story''. This series is loosely based on Kiriamiti's experiences as a young criminal in Nairobi, and was written mainly whilst he was in prison for robbery. The events in the book are narrated against the background of an alleged incident of brutality by warders on the prisoners, at Naivasha Maximum Security Prison on 24 April 1972. This book, the best-selling Kenyan novel of all time, is currently being adapted into a film. Plot The novel starts immediately after the arrest of protagonist Jack Zollo in ''My Life as a Criminal.'' Zollo is sentenced to twenty years of hard labour for robbery.
