John Kean (South Carolina Politician)
John Kean (1756 – May 4, 1795) was an American merchant, banker and member of the Continental Congress from South Carolina who was the first in a long line of American politicians. Early life Kean was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1756. He was raised in Beaufort County, South Carolina by his mother, Jane Grove and stepfather, Captain Samuel Grove, a wealthy and successful merchant. Career Kean apprenticed with his stepfather's business partner, Peter Lavien, learning business and bookkeeping. By the time of the American Revolutionary War, Kean was a prominent merchant in his home state of South Carolina. During the War, he served as deputy paymaster of the South Carolina Militia under paymaster Daniel de Saussure. Kean was taken prisoner during the Siege of Charleston in 1780 by General Sir Henry Clinton. John Kean (New Jersey Politician)
John Kean (December 4, 1852November 4, 1914) was an American attorney, banker and Republican Party politician from Elizabeth, New Jersey. He represented New Jersey in the U.S. Senate from 1899 to 1911 and served two separate terms in the United States House of Representatives, from 1883 to 1885, and from 1887 to 1889. A member of the Kean family of politicians, his great-grandfather, John Kean, had been a delegate to the Continental Congress for South Carolina, his brother was U.S. Senator Hamilton Fish Kean, his nephew was U.S. Representative Robert Kean and his great-nephew was Governor Thomas Kean. Colonel John Kean (March 27, 1814 – January 17, 1895) was an American businessman and public official. Early life Kean was born on March 27, 1814. He was the eldest son of Peter Philip James Kean and Sarah Sabina ( Morris) Kean (1788–1878). His sister, Julia Ursin Niemcewiez Kean, married Governor of New York, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Secretary of State Hamilton Fish (a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant).Corning (1918), pp. 20–22. His father was the only child of Continental Congressmen John Kean, who also served as cashier of the Bank of the United States, and Susan (née Livingston) Kean. John Kean (Canadian Politician)
John Kean (June 4, 1820 – May 31, 1892) was an Irish-Canadian businessman and political figure. He represented Simcoe East in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative from 1875 to 1879. He was born in Bushmills, County Antrim, Ireland in 1820 and, in 1832, came to Halton County in Upper Canada, where his parents had settled in 1824. He settled at Brantford, where he worked as a millwright, building sawmills and gristmills in the region. In 1850, he married Mary Jordan and the couple moved to Orillia in 1852. Kean served as reeve for the townships of Orillia and Matchedash from 1862 to 1869 and was warden of Simcoe County in 1868. In 1869, with partners, he built a large sawmill at the outlet of the Hogg River at Victoria Harbour.
