''The Buccaneer'' is a 1958 pirate-war film made by Paramount Pictures starring Yul Brynner as Jean Lafitte, Charles Boyer and Claire Bloom. Charlton Heston played a supporting role as Andrew Jackson, the second time that Heston played Jackson, having portrayed him earlier in the 1953 film ''The President's Lady''. The film was shot in Technicolor and VistaVision, the story takes place during the War of 1812, telling a heavily fictionalized version of how the privateer Lafitte helped in the Battle of New Orleans and how he had to choose between fighting for America or for the side most likely to win, the United Kingdom. 31st Academy Awards
The 31st Academy Awards ceremony was held on April 6, 1959, to honor the best films of 1958. The show's producer, Jerry Wald, started cutting numbers from the show to make sure it ran on time. He cut too much material and the ceremony ended 20 minutes early, leaving Jerry Lewis to attempt to fill in the time. Eventually, NBC cut to a re-run of a sports show. The film '' Gigi'' won nine Oscars, breaking the previous record of eight (set by ''Gone with the Wind'' and tied by ''From Here to Eternity'' and ''On the Waterfront''). It would be short-lived, however, as '' Ben-Hur'' broke the record with eleven Oscars the following year. The Academy Award for Best Costume Design is one of the Academy Awards presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for achievement in film costume design. The award was first given in 1949, for films made in 1948. Initially, separate award categories were established for black-and-white films and color films. Since the merger of the two categories in 1967, the academy has traditionally avoided giving out the award to films with a contemporary setting. Ralph Jester
Ralph Jester (July 10, 1901 – September 25, 1991) was an American costume designer, sculptor, and artist. Born in Tyler, Texas, he graduated in 1919 from the Terrill School, the forerunner to St. Mark's School of Texas. He was educated at Yale, where he was an editor of the campus humor magazine ''The Yale Record''. After graduating from Yale and studying at the American Academy in Fontainebleau, France, Jester moved to Hollywood. By 1931, he was working as an art director and costume designer for Cecil B. DeMille and Paramount Pictures. For much of his career, his closest collaborator was Edith Head. For DeMille's epic ''Cleopatra'' (1934), Jester designed Claudette Colbert’s marble throne as well as the busts of Colbert and her co star, Warren William. He is perhaps best known professionally as one of the costume designers of ''The Ten Commandments'' (1956). He also worked on such films as ''Omar Khayyam'' (1957) and '' The Buccaneer'' (1958).
