John Jeffries
John Jeffries (5 February 1744 – 16 September 1819) was an American physician, scientist, and military surgeon with the British Army in Nova Scotia and New York during the American Revolution. He is best known for accompanying French inventor Jean-Pierre Blanchard on his 1785 balloon flight across the English Channel. Biography Born in Boston, Jeffries graduated from Harvard College lass of 1763and obtained his medical degree at the University of Aberdeen. Dr. Jeffries played a role in the trial for the Boston Massacre as a witness for the defense. He was the surgeon for Patrick Carr, who was one of the Americans shot during that incident. Between 1771 through 1774 Jeffries was a surgeon on board a squadron of British ships in Boston Harbor and helped the wounded British soldiers on 17 June 1775 at the Battle of Bunker Hill. John Calvin Jeffries, Jr. (born ca. 1948) is a prominent law professor and was dean of the University of Virginia School of Law from 2001 to 2008. Biography Jeffries is the David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law. He is best known for his work in criminal law, with his essays included in many major textbooks in the subject area. He is also a co-author of one of the foremost criminal law textbooks, ''Criminal Law'' with Professors Richard J. Bonnie, Anne M. Coughlin, and Peter W. Low. A scholar on constitutional law, federal courts, civil rights, civil procedure, First Amendment rights, and the Supreme Court, Jeffries has authored or co-authored a total of ten textbooks, primarily on civil rights and criminal law. John Jeffries II
John Jeffries II (March 23, 1796– July 1876) was an American ophthalmic surgeon who co-founded the Massachusetts Charitable Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1824 with Edward Reynolds. This organization, which began life as the Boston Eye Infirmary, became officially incorporated in 1826 and maintained that name until 1924 when it became Massachusetts Eye and Ear. Jeffries and Reynolds were the only surgical staff until 1833 when the staff was expanded to include other assistant surgeons as well as an apothecary. Jeffries resigned from this position 1842 and had no other official interaction with the institution until his son Benjamin was named Surgeon of the Infirmary in 1867. Sir John Francis Jeffries (28 March 1929 – 25 January 2019) was a New Zealand local politician, civil servant and later a judge of the High Court. Biography Early life and career Jeffries was born in Wellington on 28 March 1929 to Frank and Mary Jeffries and grew up in Lyall Bay. He was the second born in a family of five. His mother was a schoolteacher and his father was a joiner by trade who was unemployed during the Great Depression. His family experienced much prejudice in their lives due to their Irish Catholic background. He was educated at St Patrick's College. He failed his School Certificate exam three times and the college rector wrote a reference for Jeffries recommending to prospective employers not to hire him for a job requiring study. He began work in 1946, first as an insurance clerk, and then as a teacher. Upon finding employment he contracted tuberculosis. Harry George Armstrong (February 17, 1899 – February 5, 1983) was a major general in the United States Air Force, a physician, and an airman. He is widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of aviation medicine. The "Armstrong limit", the altitude above which water boils at the temperature of the human body, is named after him. Armstrong served in the Marines during World War I and the army and air force from 1930 to 1957. As director of the United States Aeromedical Research Laboratory, he applied his medical and aviation knowledge to the improvement of aircrew protection from temperature extremes and the lack of oxygen at high altitude.
