John I. Redick
John Irvin Redick (July 29, 1828 – April 2, 1906) was a prominent pioneer professional, public, and business figure in Omaha, Nebraska. He was appointed an associate judge of New Mexico (then part of the territory of Arizona) by President Ulysses S. Grant. Biography Redick was the son of a farmer from Wooster, Ohio who was born July 29, 1828. After attending Delaware College in Delaware, Ohio to learn about the law, Redick moved to Lansing, Michigan to enter the bar. After opening a law office, he also started a real estate practice there. Redick's first marriage was on November 5, 1855, to Mary E. Higby. She died October 30, 1864. Their children were Charles5 Robinson Redick and William Armstrong Redick. In 1856 Redick and his wife moved to Omaha. In 1859, Redick joined a man named Clinton Briggs in a partnership. Wooster ( ) is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Wayne County. Redick Mansion
The Redick Mansion, also known as the Mayne Mansion and Redick Hall, was located at 3612 North 24th Street in North Omaha, Nebraska. It served as the first home of Omaha University, now known as the University of Nebraska at Omaha, from 1909 through 1917. A five-story tower on the front of the mansion was a notable landmark throughout the area. Early history Henry and Mary Meyers built a simple wooden farmhouse along rural North 24th Street in 1875. In 1885 Clifton E. Mayne, a local real estate developer and businessman, bought the house, which was now located in a new suburb called Kountze Place. Using profits from his recent development called Orchard Hill, Mayne grew the house into a 20-room mansion, with a five-story tower and a wide veranda encircling the entire first floor. History Of Omaha
The history of Omaha, Nebraska, began before the settlement of the city, with speculators from neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa staking land across the Missouri River illegally as early as the 1840s. When it was legal to claim land in Indian Country, William D. Brown was operating the Lone Tree Ferry to bring settlers from Council Bluffs to Omaha. A treaty with the Omaha Tribe allowed the creation of the Nebraska Territory, and Omaha City was founded on July 4, 1854. With early settlement came claim jumpers and squatters, and the formation of a vigilante law group called the Omaha Claim Club, which was one of many claim clubs across the Midwest. During this period many of the city's founding fathers received lots in Scriptown, which was made possible by the actions of the Omaha Claim Club.
