John Hughes (ice Hockey B. 1988)
John Hughes (born January 6, 1988) is a Canadian professional ice hockey Centre currently playing for EC VSV in the ICE Hockey League. Playing career Hughes was taken 1st overall by the Belleville Bulls in the 2004 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection. After completing his major junior career in the OHL with the Bulls, and Brampton Battalion, he was the only player to be a 1st overall OHL Priority Selection to not go on to be picked in the NHL Entry Draft. Hughes opted to forge a European career, first signing with Austrian club, the EC Red Bull Salzburg of the EBEL. After a short stint in Finland and Germany with Tappara and the Hannover Indians, Hughes returned to the EBEL with Slovenian club, HDD Olimpija Ljubljana. In his first full season with Olimpija in the 2010–11 season, the skilled forward posted an impressive 64 points in 53 games, leading the league with 48 points to be selected as the EBEL rookie of the year. The centre (or center in the United States) in ice hockey is a forward (hockey), forward position of a player whose primary Hockey rink#Zones, zone of play is the middle of the ice, away from the sideboards. Centres have more flexibility in their positioning and therefore often end up covering more ice surface than any other player. Centres are ideally strong, fast skaters who are able to Checking (ice hockey), back-check quickly from deep in the opposing zone. Generally, centres are expected to be gifted passers more so than goal scorers, although there are exceptions - typically larger centres who position themselves directly in front of the net in order to score off rebounds. Champions Hockey League
The Champions Hockey League is a European first-level ice hockey tournament. Launched in the 2014–15 season by 26 clubs, 6 leagues and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the tournament features top teams across Europe. Background The IIHF launched a tournament with the same name in 2008 to coincide with the IIHF's 100th anniversary. The tournament's only season was played between 8 October 2008 and 28 January 2009, and was won by the ZSC Lions who got to play in the 2009 Victoria Cup game as a result. The IIHF planned to launch another season but was ultimately forced to cancel the tournament due to problems finding sponsors during the concurrent global economic crisis and failure to agree on a tournament format. Ron Kennedy Trophy
The Ron Kennedy Trophy is awarded to the "player judged most valuable to his team" in the Austrian Hockey League (EBEL). The trophy has been known as the ''Ron Kennedy Trophy'' since the 2009–10 Austrian Hockey League season. The trophy is named after Ron Kennedy, who died at 9 July 2009 from cancer. Austrian Hockey League
The ICE Hockey League (International Central European Hockey League), known as the win2day ICE Hockey League for sponsorship reasons, is a Central European hockey league that also serves as the top-tier ice hockey league in Austria, it currently features additional teams from Hungary, Italy, and Slovenia. The league was known as the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL) from 2003 until 2020 and as the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League during the 2021-22 season. 2007–08 OHL Season
The 2007–08 OHL season was the 28th season of the Ontario Hockey League. Twenty teams played 68 games each during the schedule, that started on September 19, 2007, and concluded on March 16, 2008. The Mississauga IceDogs relocated to the Gatorade Garden City Complex in downtown St. Catharines after getting approval of the team's sale to Bill Burke by the Board of Governors on June 5, 2007. The team was renamed the Niagara IceDogs. The Toronto St. Michael's Majors replaced the IceDogs in the Hershey Centre, renaming themselves, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. The Kingston Frontenacs moved late-season from the Kingston Memorial Centre to the new K-Rock Centre, which opened on February 22, 2008.
