John Adams Howell
John Adams Howell (March 16, 1840 – January 10, 1918) was a rear admiral of the United States Navy, who served during the Civil War and the Spanish–American War. He was also a noted inventor. Biography Howell was born in Bath, New York, on March 16, 1840 to William and Adelphia Frances Howell. He had four brothers; Edward Augustus Howell, William Howell, Jr. and twin brothers Robert and William Adams that died before their first birthdays. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1858, and was promoted to lieutenant in April 1861. He married Arabelle E. Krause on May 11, 1867, and they had three children: William, Arabella, and Frances. During the American Civil War, Howell served as executive officer of the steam sloop at the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864, and was honorably mentioned by his commanding officer in his despatches. John Howell & Son, known as John Howell, was the leading building and engineering company in Hastings, Sussex in the 1860s. Its founder, John Howell Senior (ca.1825−1893) engineered churches and other public buildings in the area to the designs of innovative architects, including Holy Trinity Church in 1860 to the design of Samuel Sanders Teulon, and St Johns Church, Hollington in 1865−1868 for Edward Alexander Wyon. John White Howell (December 22, 1857 – July 28, 1937) was an American electrical engineer who spent his entire professional career (1880 to 1930) working for Thomas Edison, specializing in the development and manufacturing of the incandescent lamp. In 1924 Howell was a recipient of the IEEE Edison Medal for his contributions towards the development of the incandescent lamp. John Morgan Howell (1855-1928) was a prominent figure in the public life of Cardiganshire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A supporter of the Liberal Party, he represented Aberaeron as a county councillor for over thirty years and served on many other public bodies. Shortly after he was elected as county councillor in 1889, Howell married Ann Evans at the Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist Church, Aberaeron. Howell was a prominent figure at Tabernacle, became its precentor in 1874, and was also superintendent of the Sunday school from a young age. It was said that he was the mainstay of the musical festivals or Cymanfaoedd held in the district. John McDade Howell (January 28, 1922 – January 3, 2016) was the seventh chancellor of East Carolina University. He was born in Five Points, Alabama. In 1942, he joined the US Army Air Corps and served for three years in the European Theater, which he received a Bronze Star. After he was honorably discharged he enrolled at the University of Alabama, earning a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1948 and a master's degree in political science the following year. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa. In 1954 Howell earned his doctorate in political science from Duke University. John Howell (1809 – 25 May 1874) was a New Zealand whaler, trader, pastoralist and politician.
