Sir John Houston, 3rd Baronet
Sir John Houston, 3rd Baronet (or Houstoun; died 1722), of Houstoun, Renfrew, and Glasgow, Lanarkshire, was a Scottish Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1708 and 1715. He was a Jacobite. Biography Houston was the only son of Sir John Houston, 2nd Baronet, of Houston, Renfrewshire, and his wife Anne Drummond, daughter of John Drummond, 1st Earl of Melfort. He was educated at Glasgow. In 1717, he succeeded his father to the baronetcy in 1717. Houston was elected as Member of Parliament for Linlithgowshire at a by-election on 22 December 1708. He was returned again at the 1710 British general election. John Houston (immigrant)
John Houston (1689 or 1690 – 1754), of Scottish-Irish heritage, immigrated from Ireland to Colonial America in the 1730s. During the voyage they learned that the ship's captain planned on robbing the wealthy passengers of their gold sovereigns. They took control of the vessel and sailed to Philadelphia. After living a number of years in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Houston moved his family and established a plantation in what is now Rockbridge County, Virginia. His great grandson was Sam Houston. Background During the British Civil War, also known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the Houstons and other Presbyterians immigrated from Scotland and settled in Ulster. John Houston, (1 April 1930 – 27 September 2008) was a Scottish painter. Houston was born in Buckhaven, Fife, raised in nearby Windygates, and educated at Buckhaven High School and Edinburgh College of Art. An early career as a semi-professional footballer with Dundee United F.C. was ended by a knee injury. Houston taught at Edinburgh College of Art between 1955 and 1989. He painted landscapes in an expressionist style. His works are on display at many Scottish art galleries.
