John Hoskins (footballer)
John Frederick Hoskins (10 May 1931 – 2006) was an English footballer who played at outside-left in the 1950s, making over 230 appearances for Southampton followed by a brief spell at Swindon Town. Football career Hoskins was born in Southampton, the great-nephew of Bert Hoskins, who had played for the club in the 1900s before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers. Having played youth football with Millbrook Rangers, he joined Winchester City where he gained a reputation as a prolific goalscorer. This brought him to the attention of his hometown club for whom he signed as a professional in July 1952. Hoskins made his debut in a 3–0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers on 6 December, with his first goal coming in the next match, a 2–2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest. He soon became a regular on the left wing, making 20 Second Division appearances in his debut season, scoring five goals. John Hoskins (officer)
John Madison Hoskins (October 22, 1898 – March 30, 1964) was an officer and aviator in the United States Navy who retired as Vice admiral (United States), Vice Admiral. After graduating the United States Naval Academy, Hoskins entered flight school and served his entire subsequent career in naval aviation, serving aboard and eventually commanding aircraft carriers in the Pacific Ocean after World War II. Despite losing his right foot in an explosion which destroyed (CVL-23) in 1944, Hoskins refused retirement and went on to serve as the first commanding officer of the new (CV-37). After the war, Hoskins became a leading proponent of jet aircraft on carriers, was assigned to training command of the first naval jet aviators designated for carrier assignment. John Hoskins (poet)
Serjeant John Hoskins or Hoskyns (1 March 1566 – 27 August 1638) was an English poet, scholar of Greek, lawyer, judge and politician. Life He was the son of John and Margery Hoskins born in Mownton-upon-Wye, Llanwarne, Herefordshire. His father, impressed by his memory and mental abilities, arranged for him to be taught Greek at the age of ten. He attended Westminster School for a year before going to Winchester College in 1579. From 1584 to 1588 he attended their sister foundation New College, Oxford, arriving alongside Henry Wotton. Hoskins was expelled from Oxford University before he became Regent master: the authorities did not appreciate his biting satire. He became a teacher in Ilchester, Somerset, where he worked on a Greek lexicon which went as far as the letter M. Through a fortuitous meeting with Benedicta Moyle, who later became his first wife, he then gained entrance to the Middle Temple to study for the bar. Johnnie S. Hoskins MBE (1892 Waitara, New Zealand – 1987 Kent, England) was the most significant promoter of speedway and stock car racing in the United Kingdom, he is considered by some to have invented motorcycle speedway. Early life Born at Waitara, Hoskins grew up in New Zealand, where he left school at thirteen and worked on a farm, before becoming a postman. He next decided to try his luck in Australia, working as a telegraph operator at Wagga Wagga, then moving on to Sydney. After running low on funds in Sydney, Hoskins got on a train with enough money to get him as far as West Maitland. When he arrived there, he met some friends who helped him to set up a charity sports programme, including boxing and street stalls, which he ran with some success. John Hoskins Stone
John Hoskins Stone (July 17, 1749 – October 5, 1804) was an American planter, soldier, and politician from Charles County, Maryland. During the Revolutionary War he led the 1st Maryland Regiment of the Continental Army. After the war he served in the state legislature and was the seventh Governor from 1794 to 1797. Personal life John was born at his father's plantation of ''Poynton Manor'' in Charles County. His family had been prominent since early colonial days when William Stone had served as governor a hundred years before his birth. His parents were David and Elizabeth (Jenifer) Stone. John Hoskin
John Hoskin (1921–1990) was a British sculptor from Cheltenham. He began drawing when he returned from Germany after serving in the Second World War. Terry Frost, a painter from the St. Ives school encouraged him to become a sculptor. John while working as an architect's draftsman but longing to become an artist, knew of the group working in St.Ives and decided to hitch-hike there one day. By a remarkable co-incidence, he was picked up and given a lift by Terry. By the time they arrived, John knew being a sculptor was his destiny. It was he that said "as if up until that journey my life had been playing out of tune." He began sculpting in the early 1950s, working with metal. His works combined shiny curved surfaces with contrasting black welded comb of rods that held them together, a conflict of geometric and organic forms.
