John Hosking (judge)
Sir John Henry Hosking (1854 – 30 May 1928) was a judge of the New Zealand Supreme Court. Biography Hosking was born in Penzance, Cornwall, England, in 1854. He emigrated to New Zealand with his family on the ''Rock City'' when he was one year old, arriving in Auckland on 6 June 1855. Hosking received his education in Auckland and at age 16, he was articled to Samuel Jackson. He passed his qualifications in 1875 and went to Dunedin, where he first worked for E. P. Kenyon, and from 1877 to 1898 was a partner in the firm Kenyon and Hosking. After Kenyon moved to England, Hosking managed the firm by himself. On the advice of Saul Solomon, a Dunedin lawyer, he became a barrister. When the office of King's Counsel was established in New Zealand in 1907, he was part of the first intake. In 1914, he was appointed judge to the Supreme Court. He retired from the bench in 1925, and retired to Wadestown. In the 1925 King's Birthday Honours, Hosking was appointed a Knight Bachelor. ...

John Hosking (politician)
John Hosking (17 April 1805 – 9 September 1882) was a politician, merchant and magistrate in the colony of New South Wales. He was the first elected mayor of Sydney, serving from 1842 to 1843. Biography Born in England, Hosking's precise birthplace has been reported as either London, Middlesex, or South Brent, Devon. His parents were Ann Elizabeth (' Mann) and John Hosking. His family emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, in 1809, before heading back to England ten years later. Hosking returned to Sydney in 1825. After a successful campaign in Sydney's first municipal elections, the council selected Hosking to be an alderman and the mayor of Sydney. He was appointed a magistrate in 1842. His public office career ended in 1843 when he resigned as mayor due to bankruptcy. Hosking was also involved in real estate and activities relating to the Methodist Church. John Hoskin
John Hoskin (1921–1990) was a British sculptor from Cheltenham. He began drawing when he returned from Germany after serving in the Second World War. Terry Frost, a painter from the St. Ives school encouraged him to become a sculptor. John while working as an architect's draftsman but longing to become an artist, knew of the group working in St.Ives and decided to hitch-hike there one day. By a remarkable co-incidence, he was picked up and given a lift by Terry. By the time they arrived, John knew being a sculptor was his destiny. It was he that said "as if up until that journey my life had been playing out of tune." He began sculpting in the early 1950s, working with metal. His works combined shiny curved surfaces with contrasting black welded comb of rods that held them together, a conflict of geometric and organic forms.
