John Horton (footballer)
John William Horton (5 January 1901 – 1970) was an English professional footballer who made one Football League appearance for Southampton in 1921. Football career Horton was born in Thurnscoe, near Barnsley in Yorkshire and first came to attention when he played for Wombwell. In 1920–21 he scored a total of 40 goals, helping Wombwell to reach second place in the Yorkshire League and gain admittance to the Midland League. In May 1921, he was signed by Southampton, then playing in the Football League Third Division South. He scored regularly for the reserve team and made his first-team debut when he replaced Bill Rawlings for the match against Watford on 29 October 1921, which ended in a 2–0 victory for the Saints. John Horton (rugby Union)
John Philip Horton (born ) is a retired English rugby union player. Born in St. Helens, Merseyside John grew up in the Windle area of the town and attended the nearby high school, now known as Cowley International College where he started playing both rugby league and rugby union. Playing Career After a brief stint playing for local side Liverpool St Helens F.C., his first semi-professional contract was at Sale Sharks. Horton then moved to Bath to play professionally whilst teaching, making 380 appearances for the club between 1973 and 1985. He made his debut against Terenure in 1973 and captained the side in 1976-77 and 1979-80. During his time at Bath, Horton amassed a total of 80 tries and a remarkable 125 drop goals. He later played for Bristol when Stuart Barnes joined from the West Country rivals in 1985. Jack Horton
John Henry Horton (15 February 1866 – 28 December 1946) was an English footballer who played in the English Football League and the 1895 FA Cup Final for West Bromwich Albion. He also played for Burslem Port Vale and Wednesbury Old Athletic. His brother Ezra was also a footballer, and was a teammate of many years at West Brom. Career Horton, a player able to play either as a defender or as an attacker, began his career at Oak Villa. He represented Wednesbury Old Athletic, before joining up with West Bromwich Albion. Whilst with West Brom he also played at least four friendly matches for Burslem Port Vale, scoring three goals, between April 1884 and December 1885. All three of his goals came in a 6–1 win over Wednesbury Town on 5 April 1884. He made his league debut on 8 September 1888, at full-back for West Bromwich Albion in a 2–0 win against Stoke at the Victoria Ground. Club career Following an unsuccessful trial with Bury, Horton signed for Charlton Athletic in 1926. John LaGale Horton (April 30, 1925 – November 5, 1960) was an American singer-songwriter and musician. Initially performing traditional country, Horton later performed rockabilly songs. He is best known for a series of history-inspired narrative country saga songs that became international hits. His 1959 single "The Battle of New Orleans" was awarded the 1960 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. The song was awarded the Grammy Hall of Fame Award and in 2001 ranked No. 333 of the Recording Industry Association of America's "Songs of the Century". His first No. 1 country song was in 1959, "When It's Springtime in Alaska (It's Forty Below)". He had two successes in 1960 with both " Sink the Bismarck" and "North to Alaska," the latter used over the opening credits to the John Wayne film of the same name.
