John Hopkins (cricketer)
John Anthony Hopkins (born 16 June 1953) is a former Welsh cricketer who played for Glamorgan. Hopkins was a right-handed batsman and part-time wicket-keeper. He first kept for Glamorgan at the age of 17 years and 68 days which was a record for the county and the Sunday League competition. With Eifion Jones commanding a regular place behind the stumps he was forced to concentrate on his batting and was soon opening the batting for Glamorgan. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. List A cricket is a classification of the limited-overs (one-day) form of the sport of cricket, with games lasting up to eight hours. List A cricket includes One Day International (ODI) matches and various domestic competitions in which the number of overs in an innings per team ranges from forty to sixty, as well as some international matches involving nations who have not achieved official ODI status. Together with first-class and Twenty20 cricket, List A is one of the three major forms of cricket recognised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Glamorgan County Cricket Club
Glamorgan County Cricket Club ( cy, Criced Morgannwg) is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Glamorgan ( cy, Morgannwg). Founded in 1888, Glamorgan held minor status at first and was a prominent member of the early Minor Counties Championship before the First World War. In 1921, the club joined the County Championship and the team was elevated to first-class status, subsequently playing in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England and Wales. Glamorgan is the only Welsh first-class cricket club. They have won the English County Championship competition in 1948, 1969 and 1997. The wicket-keeper in the sport of cricket is the player on the fielding side who stands behind the wicket or stumps being watchful of the batsman and ready to take a catch, stump the batsman out and run out a batsman when occasion arises. The wicket-keeper is the only member of the fielding side permitted to wear gloves and external leg guards. The role of the keeper is governed by Law 27 of the Laws of Cricket. The NatWest Pro40 League was a one-day cricket league for first-class cricket counties in England and Wales. It was inaugurated in 1999, but was essentially the old Sunday League retitled to reflect large numbers of matches being played on days other than Sunday. Sunday League The Sunday League was launched in 1969, as the second one-day competition in England and Wales alongside the Gillette Cup (launched in 1963). Sponsored by John Player & Sons, the league was called John Player's County League (1969), the John Player League (1970–83), then the John Player Special League (1984–86). Eifion Jones (cricketer)
Eifion Wyn Jones (born 25 June 1942 in Velindre, Glamorgan) was a Welsh cricketer who played for Glamorgan County Cricket Club. When he first came to Glamorgan Jones was a specialist right-handed batsman but after being tutored by Phil Clift he became a wicketkeeper. He made his first-class debut in 1961, and served as deputy keeper to David Evans until the late 1960s, when he became the county's first-choice keeper, a position he held until 1982. He took a record 933 dismissals for his county. In 1970 he took 7 dismissals in an innings against Cambridge University, and he finished the season with 94 dismissals. However, the continued good form of Alan Knott and Bob Taylor kept him out of consideration for the Test team. Jeffris Hopkins
Jeffris David Hopkins (born 23 August 1950) is a former Welsh cricketer. Hopkins was a right-handed batsman who fielded as a wicket-keeper. He was born at Bridgend, Glamorgan. Having played for the Glamorgan Second XI since in 1967 and 1968, Hopkins joined Middlesex for the 1969 season, making his first-class debut in that same season against Lancashire in the County Championship. He also made his List A debut in that same season, against Essex in the Player's County League. With opportunities limited at Middlesex due to presence of regular wicket-keeper John Murray, Hopkins made just three further first-class appearances, the last of which came against Northamptonshire in the 1972 County Championship, as well as appearing in just one more List A match, against Derbyshire in the 1971 John Player League.
