John Homer Seger
John Homer Seger (February 23, 1846 – February 6, 1928) was an American educator best known for his work with the Arapaho tribe in Oklahoma. Early years Seger was born in Geauga County, Ohio, and grew up in Dover, Bureau County, Illinois. His parents were Andrew and Louisa Knox Seger, who had seven children, four boys and three girls. John's father, Andrew, was born August 3, 1812 in Onondaga County, New York. At the age of twenty, Andrew moved to Geauga County, Ohio, where he met Louisa, who had been born there on June 4, 1817. He acquired some land in the wilderness, where Andrew began farming and built a one-room sod house, in which all their children were born. John also had another brother, Frank, who died in infancy. Cheyenne And Arapaho Indian Reservation
Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian Reservation were the lands granted the Southern Cheyenne and the Southern Arapaho by the United States under the Medicine Lodge Treaty signed in 1867. The tribes never lived on the land described in the treaty and did not want to. Recognizing this fact, on August 10, 1869 President Ulysses S. Grant issued an executive order to set aside lands instead on the North Fork of the Canadian River for the tribes, closer to their territory. The lands were located in western Indian Territory south of the Cherokee Outlet and north of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Indian Reservation. However, a portion of it was split off later to form the Caddo-Wichita-Delaware Indian Reservation. Washita County, Oklahoma
Washita County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,629. Its county seat is New Cordell. The county seat was formerly located in Cloud Chief. The county was created in 1891. History In 1883, John Miles leased of Cheyenne and Arapaho land to seven cattlemen. However, arguments soon developed between the cattlemen and the tribesmen. In 1885, the Federal government terminated all of the leases and ordered the cattlemen to remove their stock. The area was settled in 1886, when John Seger established a colony along Cobb Creek. Seger convinced 120 Cheyenne and Arapaho to settle near the old ranch headquarters at Cobb Creek. The intent was that "Seger's Colony" would teach these tribes how to farm, using modern agricultural methods. Seger Indian Training School
The Seger Indian Training School was a historic school on the eastern edge of Colony, Oklahoma. John Homer Seger, a white settler in the Indian Territory, founded the school in 1893. Seger had come to the Darlington Agency in 1875 to work as a teacher, and he established the Seger Colony (the predecessor of Colony) in 1886 with 120 Arapaho. His school taught farming and industrial skills to Native Americans until it closed in 1941; one of the buildings later became Colony's public school.
