John Herbert (Queensland Politician)
John Desmond Herbert (11 February 1925 – 30 October 1978) was an Australian politician, who was the Liberal Party member for the electoral district of Sherwood in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1956 to 1978. Herbert was born in Brisbane, to botanist Desmond Herbert and his wife, Vera Prowse (the daughter of John Henry Prowse, a federal politician from Western Australia). Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Queensland Heritage Register
The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. As at 5 April 2020 there are 1790 places on the Queensland Heritage Register, including the Story Bridge in Brisbane and the Ross River Meatworks Chimney in Townsville. Criteria For a place to be entered in the register, it must be nominated and then go through a process of assessment. Sherwood Arboretum
Sherwood Arboretum is a heritage-listed arboretum at 39A Turner Street, Sherwood, Queensland, Australia. A 1946 addition to the site is also known as the John Herbert Memorial Vista. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 3 May 2007. History The Sherwood Arboretum covers an area of 15 hectares, containing approximately 1,100 trees from about 300 species. The arboretum comprises parkland, artificial freshwater wetland and has an extensive frontage to the Brisbane River. In keeping with an international trend toward the application of scientific methods to forestry, and over concern for the depleting stock of Queensland's forests and commercial timbers, Sherwood Arboretum was established at the urging of a number of community interest groups, the Local Government Authorities and the Queensland Government. The English, Scottish & Australian Bank Limited was an Australian bank founded in 1852 by Royal Charter in London and named English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank. Following a financial reconstruction in 1893 its business was renamed English, Scottish and Australian Bank Limited. Known to all as ES&A it merged with ANZ on 1 October 1970 to form Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited. History ES&A opened its first Australian branch in Sydney in 1853. Electoral District Of Sherwood
Sherwood was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1950 to 1992. First created for the 1950 state election, the district was based in the south-western suburbs of Brisbane, covering areas that previously belonged to the abolished district of Oxley. At first taking in a wide sweep of then-outer suburban areas such as Sunnybank, Runcorn and Kuraby, it came to be based in the Chelmer peninsula and the Centenary Suburbs from the 1960 election onwards, and was a very safe Liberal seat for its entire existence. Sherwood was abolished by the 1991 redistribution, taking effect at the 1992 state election. Most of its territory was allocated to the new districts of Indooroopilly and Mount Ommaney.
